The LaCie 1big Dock 8TB (STHS8000800) is a single-drive desktop storage unit with a built-in dock for photographers and video editors working on a laptop: one Thunderbolt 3 cable gives the computer 8TB of enterprise-class storage, SD and CompactFlash card readers, a USB-A port, a DisplayPort monitor output and laptop charging.

Inside is a 7200 RPM Seagate IronWolf Pro drive designed for always-on use. It works with Mac and Windows over Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C, ships formatted exFAT, and adds a second Thunderbolt 3 port so you can daisy-chain more storage or a display.

Before you order: This is a single drive — there is no RAID mirroring, so keep a second copy of important projects elsewhere. Full speed needs Thunderbolt or a USB 10Gbps port; on a USB 5Gbps port it works at up to 5Gb/s.

What It Means in Practice

  • Plug one cable into the laptop and you get storage, card readers, a USB-A port, an external monitor and charging — useful for an editing laptop with only USB-C ports.
  • Laptop charging reaches up to 60W through the dock; heavier 85W+ workstation laptops may still need their own charger under load.
  • Card readers let you offload SD or CompactFlash cards straight to the 8TB drive without a separate reader.
  • Ships formatted exFAT, so it reads and writes on both macOS and Windows; reformat only if you want Time Machine or NTFS.

What Will Not Work

  • CFexpress, CFast or XQD cards — the front slots are SDXC and CompactFlash (CF 6.0 Type I) only.
  • RAID protection — a single drive cannot mirror itself; for mirroring choose the 2big Dock.
  • HDMI monitors without an adapter — video out is DisplayPort 1.4 and no adapter is included.
  • Replacing or upgrading the drive yourself — opening the enclosure voids the warranty.
  • Network sharing — it is direct-attached storage for one computer, not a NAS.

Will it charge my MacBook Pro?
It supplies up to 60W, which keeps most 13–14" laptops charged. Larger laptops with 96W or 140W chargers will charge slower or drain under heavy load.
Can I connect it to a USB-C Windows laptop without Thunderbolt?
Yes. It works on USB-C ports at the port's speed (5 or 10Gb/s). Thunderbolt-only features such as daisy-chaining need a Thunderbolt port.
Is the data protected if the drive fails?
No — there is one drive and no mirroring. Rescue Data Recovery Services covers recovery attempts, but you should keep a second copy of important work.
What does Rescue Data Recovery mean?
It is LaCie's data recovery service plan included with the drive; it is not available in every country, so ask us before you rely on it.
