Frequently Asked Questions

How does the password protection work?
The Mobile Drive Secure offers self-encrypting password protection set up through LaCie/Seagate software, locking the drive so its contents stay private on both Mac and Windows.
Does it work with USB-C and USB-A computers?
Yes. It connects over USB-C and includes both USB-C and USB-A cables, so it works with modern and older laptops and desktops, as well as USB4 and Thunderbolt hosts.
Is it an SSD or a hard drive?
It is a mechanical 2.5-inch hard drive. For solid-state speed, the LaCie Mobile SSD or a rugged SSD is the alternative.
Does it work with a Mac?
Yes. It works with Windows and macOS; reformat it for full Mac read and write or Time Machine. It also includes Rescue Data Recovery Services.
Singular Expert Insight
The Mobile Drive Secure is the password-protected version of LaCie's stylish aluminium portable drive: you get the same premium design plus built-in security, ideal if you carry sensitive files. As a mechanical HDD it favours capacity and price over speed — if you need fast editing off the drive, a portable SSD is the upgrade. But for secure, good-looking high-capacity storage, this portable hard drive is a strong choice.

Buyer's Guide

Buy it if
You want secure, password-protected 4TB portable storage with a premium aluminium design and modern USB-C, plus Rescue services.
Skip it if
You need SSD speed, rugged drop and water protection, or hardware keypad entry — this is a mechanical portable HDD with software-set password protection.
Also consider
A LaCie Rugged drive for tougher protection, a portable SSD for speed, or the standard Mobile Drive if you do not need security.
