The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 in this configuration ships with 24GB of DDR5-5600 rather than the usual 16GB — a useful amount of headroom for a machine that holds a single memory module. Why 24GB rather than 16 or 32?

Because there is only one memory slot. A 24GB module gives most of the benefit of the 32GB ceiling without paying for the top part, and it saves you buying and fitting a module yourself. The 16GB version of this same machine is the cheaper entry point, and the 32GB upgrade adds only 8GB more.

There are two ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 models. Which is this?

This is the Intel version, machine type 21YE, with a six-core Core 5 320, one memory slot, one drive slot and Thunderbolt 4. The AMD version, machine type 21Y4, has a four-core Ryzen AI 5 330 with a 50 TOPS Copilot+ engine, two memory slots to 64GB, two drive slots and USB4 instead of Thunderbolt. Order by part number.

Can I add a second drive?

No. There is one M.2 2242 slot taking up to 1TB, and it accepts short 2242 cards only, not full-length 2280. The AMD version of this model has two drive slots if that matters.

Is this a Copilot+ PC?

No. Lenovo classifies it as an AI PC with a 16 TOPS neural engine, and Copilot+ on-device features require around 40 TOPS or more. The AMD version of this same model reaches 50 TOPS and does qualify.
