ThinkStation P5 Gen 2 — Xeon 636, ECC memory and RTX PRO 4000 with 24 GB

RTX PRO 4000 24 GB ECCIntel Xeon 636, 12 cores64 GB DDR5-6400 ECC8 DIMM slots, 1 TB max

This ThinkStation P5 Gen 2 is the large-graphics configuration of Lenovo’s Xeon workstation: an NVIDIA RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell with 24 GB of GDDR7 ECC memory, an Intel Xeon 636 with twelve cores and 24 threads, 64 GB of registered ECC DDR5-6400 in a quad-channel system that scales to 1 TB, and a 1 TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD. It runs Windows 11 Pro for Workstations. Error correction runs the whole way through — on the system memory and on the graphics memory — which is the specific reason this machine exists rather than a faster consumer desktop.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two configuration points. The card is the RTX PRO 4000 with 24 GB; Lenovo builds the same P5 Gen 2 with an RTX PRO 2000 and 16 GB and everything else identical — same Xeon 636, same 64 GB, same 1 TB drive, same chassis, same warranty. That single component is the specification most often ordered wrong in this range, so order by the code if the frame buffer matters. Second, the memory is registered ECC DDR5 (RDIMM) and is not interchangeable with unbuffered desktop DDR5 — expansion modules must match. The unit is supplied with a German-language Windows image; the licence is Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and other display languages can be added afterwards. No monitor, keyboard or mouse is included.

Best For

✓ Large CAD assemblies, dense BIM models and point clouds
✓ Rendering and visualisation with big scenes
✓ Local AI and simulation work needing 24 GB of graphics memory
✓ Engineering work where memory errors are unacceptable
✓ Datasets heading beyond the 256 GB ceiling of a P3
✓ Long-life deployments with on-site manufacturer service

Key Features

RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell, 24 GB GDDR7 ECC
The reason to choose this code over its sibling. Twenty-four gigabytes with error correction on the graphics memory handles models a 16 GB card cannot hold at all, and certified drivers are what CAD, BIM and visualisation vendors validate against.

Intel Xeon 636 on a quad-channel platform
Twelve cores and 24 threads at 3.5 GHz base and 4.7 GHz turbo, with 48 MB of cache on socket FCLGA4710. The Xeon is here for the platform it brings — registered ECC memory, quad-channel bandwidth and enterprise management — as much as for throughput.

64 GB of ECC RDIMM, expandable to 1 TB
Two 32 GB registered modules across eight slots. ECC corrects single-bit errors as they occur, and the terabyte ceiling means the machine grows with the work instead of being replaced when a dataset gets larger.

Enterprise management and security
Discrete TPM 2.0 certified to FIPS 140-2, Intel vPro Enterprise with AMT for out-of-band management, a 750 W fixed Platinum supply and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet on board. These are the features that make a fleet of these manageable rather than a set of individual boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need 24 GB of graphics memory?
It depends on what you open, not on how fast you want it. For general CAD and drafting, 16 GB is usually plenty and the RTX PRO 2000 version of this same machine costs less. Twenty-four gigabytes earns its price on large assemblies, dense point clouds, big rendering scenes and local AI models — the cases where a smaller card does not just slow down but runs out. Send us a typical file and we will tell you honestly.
What is the difference between this and the 16 GB version?
Only the graphics card. Same Intel Xeon 636, same 64 GB of ECC RDIMM, same 1 TB PCIe 5.0 drive, same chassis, same 3-year on-site term. This code carries the RTX PRO 4000 with 24 GB; the other carries the RTX PRO 2000 with 16 GB.
Why a Xeon rather than a Core Ultra?
For the platform. The Xeon brings registered ECC memory across eight slots to a 1 TB ceiling, quad-channel memory bandwidth and enterprise management. A Core Ultra machine like the P3 Tower will win some benchmarks outright, but it caps at 256 GB of unbuffered memory and offers no ECC. Choose by whether your work needs those platform features.
Can I expand the memory with standard DDR5?
No. This system uses registered ECC DDR5 RDIMMs, a different module type from the unbuffered DDR5 in desktops and in the P3 range. They cannot be mixed. Tell us the capacity you want to reach and we will quote modules that match what is already fitted in the eight-slot layout.
Singular Expert Insight
Error correction end to end is the honest summary of this machine: ECC on the system memory, ECC on the 24 GB of graphics memory, and a platform that scales to a terabyte. That combination is worth real money for simulation, analysis and large-model work, and worth very little for anything that finishes in a minute — where a P3 Tower with a Core Ultra 9 would be faster and cheaper. Within the P5 Gen 2 line the only variable is the card, so decide it on file sizes: if your models fit in 16 GB, order the RTX PRO 2000 version and put the difference into displays or memory. Our PC monitors section covers what pairs with a professional card, and memory is where we match registered ECC modules to what is fitted. Tell us your software and we will confirm the certification before you order.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your models or datasets need more than 16 GB of graphics memory, and your work is long enough that ECC on both the system and the graphics memory matters. The 1 TB memory ceiling and the 3-year on-site term make it a long-life engineering platform.

Skip it if

Your work fits comfortably in 16 GB of graphics memory — the RTX PRO 2000 version is the same machine for less. Skip it too if you never approach 256 GB of system memory and do not need ECC, where a P3 Tower gives more processor for the money.

Also consider

The same P5 Gen 2 with the RTX PRO 2000 and 16 GB if the smaller frame buffer is enough, or a ThinkStation P3 Tower Gen 2 with a Core Ultra 9 if processor speed matters more than the memory platform.
