The LevelOne SFP-4210 is an industrial Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre: 1310 nm over a duplex LC connection on 9/125 µm fibre, with digital diagnostics, rated from −40 to +85 °C. It is built for industrial Ethernet links between buildings, telecom cabinets and transportation backhaul, where temperatures swing far beyond the rating of a commercial optic. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs more than a few hundred metres: the 9/125 µm fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs two single-mode fibres and a matching 1310 nm Gigabit module at the far end; it will not run on multimode fibre or pair with a single-strand BiDi module. Reach: LevelOne’s current page lists 20 km, while earlier LevelOne listings of the same model gave 10 km — plan runs up to 10 km, and send us the length and loss for anything longer. For indoor racks the commercial SFP-3211 is enough. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
