LevelOne AOC-0501 — 100 Gbps QSFP28 Active Optical Cable, 1 m
QSFP28 ↔ QSFP28100GBASE-SR4 · 4 × 25G1 mDDM · hot-swappable
The LevelOne AOC-0501 is a 1 m, 100 Gbps active optical cable (AOC) with a QSFP28 module fixed at each end. It replaces a pair of 100G SR4 transceivers plus an MPO patch cord with one sealed assembly, for 100G Ethernet links between switches, servers and storage in the same rack or the next one.
Inside, four 25.78125 Gbps lanes on a chip-on-board optical engine with 850 nm VCSEL lasers deliver 103.1 Gbps in total. The cable follows the QSFP28 MSA, 100GBASE-SR4 and CAUI-4 (IEEE 802.3bm), and also supports EDR InfiniBand 4x rates. DDM/DOM lets you read optical power and temperature from the switch, each end draws about 1.5 W at 3.3 V, and it is hot-swappable.
Before you order: Both ports must be QSFP28 100G ports that accept third-party MSA-compliant optics. Some switch vendors only allow their own coded optics — check your switch's transceiver policy, or send us the model and we will confirm.
What's in the Box
- 1 × LevelOne AOC-0501 QSFP28-to-QSFP28 active optical cable, 1 m
- 1 × Quick Installation Guide
What It Means in Practice
- One AOC replaces two transceivers and a patch cord — fewer parts, no connectors to clean, and the optics are matched at the factory.
- 1 m suits switch-to-switch or switch-to-server links within the same rack.
- Optical (not copper) means a thin, light cable that is easier to route than a 100G DAC.
- DDM gives you live optical diagnostics in the switch CLI or monitoring tool.
- Hot-swap lets you plug or replace it without powering down the switch.
What Will Not Work
- It is not a breakout cable — it will not split into 4 × 25G SFP28 ports.
- It will not fit SFP/SFP+ or SFP28 cages, and it is not intended for 40G QSFP+-only ports.
- The cable cannot be shortened, re-terminated or connected to a patch panel.
- It may be rejected by switches that only accept vendor-coded optics.
- 1 m is fixed — longer runs need a longer AOC or transceivers plus fibre.

Frequently Asked Questions
AOC or DAC — which should I use?
For 1 m both work. An AOC is thinner and lighter and is not affected by electrical interference; a copper DAC is usually cheaper but bulkier. For longer distances an AOC or transceivers are needed.
Will it work in a 40G QSFP+ port?
It is specified for 100G QSFP28 ports. Many QSFP28 ports do not down-rate an AOC to 40G, so do not plan on it.
Can I monitor it?
Yes — DDM/DOM values (temperature, voltage, Tx/Rx power) can be read from switches that support digital diagnostics.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
For short 100G links inside a rack, an AOC like this is the tidiest option: no loose optics, no fibre to clean. The main risk is not the cable but the port — confirm your
100G switches accept third-party QSFP28 MSA optics before you order.
✓ Buy it if you need a 1 m 100G QSFP28-to-QSFP28 link between switches, servers or storage in the same rack.
✕ Skip it if you need a 4 × 25G breakout, a longer run, or your switch is locked to vendor-coded optics.
→ Also consider Separate 100G SR4 QSFP28 transceivers with an MPO patch cord, or a longer LevelOne AOC length for adjacent racks.
Send us both switch or NIC models and we will confirm the AOC is accepted before you order.
