LevelOne FVM-1000 — Managed Fast Ethernet Media Converter, RJ45 to 100Base-FX SFP Slot
10/100 RJ45 ↔ SFP100Base-FX SFP slotSFP module not includedWeb / SNMP · OAM
The LevelOne FVM-1000 is a managed Fast Ethernet media converter that joins a 10/100Base-TX RJ45 copper port to an SFP slot, so an Ethernet link can run over fibre where copper stops at 100 metres. It suits 100 Mbps fibre links where you choose the optics yourself — multimode or single-mode, short or long reach — by fitting the right 100Base-FX SFP.
Unlike a plug-and-play converter, the FVM-1000 can be monitored and configured: a web interface and SNMP, IEEE 802.3ah OAM for remote loopback tests and dying-gasp alarms, Link Fault Pass-through (LFP), Q-in-Q VLAN tagging and per-port bandwidth limits. It is a desktop unit with a built-in power supply — a mains power cord is in the box.
Before you order: no SFP module is included, and the slot is 100Base-FX: you need a 100 Mbps (100Base-FX) SFP whose fibre type, wavelength and connector match the far end. Standard Gigabit (1000Base-X) SFPs will not work in this slot.
What's in the Box
- FVM-1000 managed media converter
- Power cord (built-in power supply)
- Quick installation guide
- Declaration of conformity
- SFP module, fibre patch cords and the far-end converter are not included
What It Means in Practice
- Pick the SFP for the job: multimode for in-building runs, single-mode for long links — the converter stays the same.
- The SFP slot is hot-swap, so optics can be changed without powering down.
- With 802.3ah OAM you can loop back the remote end and see a dying-gasp alarm if the far site loses power — useful when the other end is in another building or a customer premises.
- LFP passes a fibre failure through to the copper port, so the switch behind the converter sees the link go down and redundancy (e.g. spanning tree) can react.
- Bandwidth can be capped from 0 to 100 Mbps in 64 kbps steps — handy for a rate-limited service hand-off.
What Will Not Work
- Without an SFP module — none is supplied.
- Gigabit 1000Base-SX/LX SFP modules: the slot is 100 Mbps.
- Gigabit speed on the link: maximum 100 Mbps.
- PoE: the RJ45 port neither supplies nor receives power.
Key Features
Web and SNMP management
Configure port speed, duplex and flow control on the local and the remote unit, and read live port status. MIB files are provided for SNMP tools.
802.3ah OAM
OAM discovery, MIB variable response, remote loopback and dying-gasp alarm for fault-finding without a site visit.
LFP and Q-in-Q
Link Fault Pass-through, plus Q-in-Q (dual tag) with configurable ISP tag and TPID on the fibre and copper ports.
Jumbo frames and rate limit
9 KB jumbo frames, store-and-forward or cut-through, and bandwidth limiting in 64 kbps steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which SFP should I buy?
A 100Base-FX SFP that matches your fibre (multimode or single-mode), distance and the module at the other end. Send us the fibre type and distance and we will match one.
Can I use a Gigabit SFP and run at 100 Mbps?
No. Gigabit SFPs (1000Base-SX/LX) are a different standard and do not drop to 100Base-FX. Use a 100Base-FX module.
What goes at the other end?
A second FVM-1000 with the same SFP type is the safest pair; a switch with a 100Base-FX port of the same optics also works.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The FVM-1000 is the flexible version of LevelOne’s managed Fast Ethernet converters: one box, any 100Base-FX optics. The catch is the module — it must be 100Base-FX, not the far more common Gigabit SFP. If you are planning new fibre, consider Gigabit converters or
network switches with SFP ports instead.
✓ Buy it if you need a managed 100 Mbps fibre link and want to choose the optics with a 100Base-FX SFP.
✕ Skip it if you only have Gigabit SFPs or need more than 100 Mbps.
→ Also consider LevelOne FVM-1101 (fixed SC multimode) or GVT-2011 for Gigabit with two SFP slots.
Not sure which model the other end of your link needs? Send us the fibre type, distance and the device at the far end and we will check it before you order.
