LevelOne FVT-1103 — Fast Ethernet Media Converter, RJ45 to SC Single-Mode Fiber, 40 km
10/100 RJ45 ↔ 100Base-FXSC single-mode · 1310 nmUp to 40 kmPlug and play
The LevelOne FVT-1103 is an unmanaged Fast Ethernet media converter that connects a 10/100Base-TX copper port to 100Base-FX single-mode fibre with an SC connector, reaching up to 40 km at 1310 nm. It is aimed at long point-to-point links — between distant buildings, along roads, across farms, ports or industrial estates — where a simple, set-and-forget copper-to-fibre bridge is all that is needed.
There is nothing to configure: plug the RJ45 port into your switch or device, connect the SC duplex fibre and power the unit from the included adapter. It handles full and half duplex, IEEE 802.3x flow control and extra-long packets up to 1.6 KB, and it can stand alone on a shelf or be mounted in a LevelOne converter chassis when several links terminate in the same rack.
Before you order: Single-mode fibre only, 100 Mbps, 1310 nm, SC connector, two fibres. The far end must be a 100Base-FX single-mode port rated for the distance — usually a second FVT-1103. It will not link to multi-mode fibre, Gigabit fibre ports or BIDI single-fibre units. Long links depend on the actual fibre loss; tell us the route length and number of splices if you are near the limit.
What's in the Box
- 1 × LevelOne FVT-1103 media converter
- 1 × power adapter
- 1 × Quick Installation Guide
- Fibre patch cords are not included
What It Means in Practice
- Two FVT-1103 units make a 100 Mbps link of up to 40 km over a pair of single-mode fibres.
- No management means nothing to log into or update — but also no remote diagnostics; if you need loopback or SNMP, look at the managed FVM-1220.
- 100 Mbps is ample for CCTV, intercom, PLC/SCADA, access control and remote-site internet uplinks.
- Fibre breaks the electrical path between sites, which protects equipment from lightning-induced surges and earth-potential differences on long copper runs.
What Will Not Work
- It will not work on multi-mode fibre.
- It will not connect at Gigabit speed or to 1000Base-LX ports.
- It cannot work over a single fibre — for that use a BIDI set such as the LevelOne FVT-2202.
- It has no web/SNMP management, VLAN or OAM features.
- It does not supply PoE.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair it with a different brand?
Yes, as long as the other end is a standards-based 100Base-FX single-mode 1310 nm port with enough optical budget for your distance. For the most predictable result we recommend the same model at both ends.
Is 40 km guaranteed on my fibre?
40 km is the rated maximum. The real reach depends on fibre attenuation, connectors and splices along the route; send us the route details and we can check the budget.
Does it work on a short link, e.g. 2 km?
Yes, single-mode long-reach converters normally work on short runs too, but LevelOne does not publish a minimum distance — tell us if your link is very short and we will confirm.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The FVT-1103 is about distance at the lowest complexity: one box per end, no configuration, up to 40 km of single-mode. If you need to monitor the link, or the far end is a
switch with an SFP slot, a managed converter or SFP module may be the better fit.
✓ Buy it if you need a simple 10/100 copper-to-fibre link over single-mode fibre up to 40 km.
✕ Skip it if you need Gigabit, remote management, or only have one fibre.
→ Also consider LevelOne FVM-1220 (managed, single-mode SC, 20 km) or FVT-2202 (BIDI set over a single fibre, 20 km).
Send us the route length, fibre type and the devices at both ends, and we will confirm the right converter pair before you order.
