LevelOne GVM-1101 — Managed Gigabit Media Converter, RJ45 to SC Multi-Mode Fiber, 500 m
10/100/1000 RJ45 ↔ 1000Base-XSC multi-mode · 850 nmUp to 500 mWeb · SNMP · OAM
The LevelOne GVM-1101 is a managed Gigabit Ethernet media converter that links a 10/100/1000Base-T copper port to 1000Base-X multi-mode fibre with an SC connector, for runs of up to 500 m at 850 nm. It suits building-to-building links, server-room uplinks and campus backbones where you want Gigabit over existing multi-mode fibre and also want to see and control what the link is doing.
Unlike a plain converter, the GVM-1101 can be configured through a web interface and monitored over SNMP. It supports IEEE 802.3ah OAM (link discovery, MIB variable response, remote loopback and dying-gasp alarm), Q-in-Q VLAN tagging, per-port speed/duplex/flow-control settings for the local and remote unit, bandwidth limiting in 64 kbps steps and jumbo frames up to 9 KB. Power comes from a built-in supply through a mains cord.
Before you order: This model has an SC connector and works on multi-mode fibre at 850 nm, up to 500 m. The far end must be 1000Base-SX-compatible multi-mode — another GVM-1101 or a switch port/SFP of the same type. It will not link to single-mode fibre (1310/1550 nm), to 100 Mbps fibre ports, or to LC/ST ports without the matching multi-mode patch cord.

What It Means in Practice
- A pair of GVM-1101 units turns two copper Gigabit ports into a 500 m multi-mode fibre link that you can manage from either end.
- OAM loopback lets you test the fibre path remotely, and the dying-gasp alarm tells you when the far unit has lost power — useful when the other end is in a locked room or another building.
- SNMP and web access mean the link can be watched from your existing monitoring tool rather than treated as an invisible box in the cable path.
- Bandwidth limiting lets you cap a tenant or a camera network on the same fibre without a separate router.
- With LFP, a fibre fault is reflected on the copper port so the switch on each end reacts to the outage.
What Will Not Work
- It will not work over single-mode fibre — for single-mode links look at single-mode models such as the LevelOne FVM-1220 (Fast Ethernet, 20 km).
- It will not reach beyond 500 m on multi-mode fibre.
- It has no SFP slot; the fibre interface is a fixed SC multi-mode port.
- It does not supply PoE on the RJ45 port.
- It is not a switch: one copper port and one fibre port only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Fast Ethernet or Gigabit?
Gigabit. The copper port auto-senses 10/100/1000 Mbps and the fibre side is 1000Base-X (1 Gbps). Some distributor listings call it Fast Ethernet; LevelOne specifies 1 Gbps.
Can I manage the far-end converter too?
Yes — when the far end is also an OAM-capable LevelOne managed converter, you can read its status and set its port speed, duplex and flow control from the local unit.
Which fibre do I need?
Multi-mode fibre with SC connectors on the converter side. Use an SC-to-LC or SC-to-SC multi-mode patch cord as needed to reach your patch panel.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Choose the GVM-1101 when a Gigabit fibre link matters enough that you want to monitor it and test it remotely. If your core already has a
switch with an SFP slot, a 1000Base-SX SFP module may be simpler; the GVM-1101 earns its place where the far end is copper-only or you need OAM diagnostics on the link itself.
✓ Buy it if you need managed Gigabit over multi-mode fibre up to 500 m, with SNMP, VLAN and remote loopback.
✕ Skip it if your fibre is single-mode, the run is longer than 500 m, or a simple unmanaged converter is enough.
→ Also consider LevelOne FVM-1220 (managed Fast Ethernet, single-mode SC, 20 km) or FVT-2002 (unmanaged, multi-mode ST, 2 km).
Send us your fibre type and length plus the switch models at both ends and we will confirm the right converter or SFP before you order.
