The LevelOne SFP-2505 is a 2.5 Gbps SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 40 km at 1550 nm over a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. LevelOne notes that the 1550 nm wavelength can share fibre infrastructure with CWDM/DWDM systems, which suits metro links, telco aggregation and long campus runs. It is rated for normal indoor temperatures, 0 to 70 °C. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.

Compatibility — check before buying:
It is a 2.5 Gbps optic: both ends must run 2.5G, so it will not link to a 1G (1000BASE) module, and the switch port must support 2.5G SFP optics — many SFP ports run 1G only and many SFP+ ports run 1G or 10G only. It needs single-mode fibre. For cabinets outdoors or in unheated plant rooms, the industrial SFP-2605 has the same optics rated −40 to 85 °C. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Frequently Asked Questions

Will it link to a 1G SFP module?
No. It is a 2.5 Gbps optic, and both ends must run the same speed. For Gigabit links over long single-mode runs, LevelOne’s SFP-3611 is the 1.25G option.
What is the difference to SFP-2605?
Same speed, wavelength and reach. The SFP-2605 is the industrial version, rated −40 to 85 °C; the SFP-2505 is rated 0 to 70 °C.
Are fibre patch cords included?
No. You get the SFP-2505 module, a Quick Installation Guide and a Declaration of Conformity. The patch cord for the LC duplex connector, a matching module for the far end of the link and a fibre cleaning tool are bought separately. Tell us the distance and the fibre type and we quote the right cord.
Will it work in a switch from another brand?
LevelOne builds the module to the SFP MSA standard and states it interoperates with any compliant port that supports the same speed. Switches that lock out third-party optics may refuse it — send us the model and we check it.
