The LevelOne SFP-2506 is a 2.5 Gbps single-mode SFP transceiver that carries 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet over 9/125 µm fibre up to 80 km at 1550 nm, through a duplex LC connection with digital diagnostics. It is the commercial-temperature version (0 to +70 °C) for long metro links, regional backhaul and ISP distribution fed from an indoor rack. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a 2.5G optic: the port must support 2.5G SFP optics — many SFP ports run only 1G and many SFP+ ports only 10G, and LevelOne publishes no 1G or 10G mode. The far end must be a matching 2.5G, 1550 nm module. For outdoor cabinets choose the industrial SFP-2606 (−40 to +85 °C) instead; this SFP-2506 is rated 0 to +70 °C. On short runs a long-reach 1550 nm optic can overload the receiver — tell us the distance. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.

Digital diagnostics (DDM/DOM) let the host report temperature, laser power and received light, so a dirty connector or a failing link shows up before users call.
Hot-swappable
Modules and cables plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch or pull tab to remove it.
