LevelOne VDS-1201 — Ethernet over VDSL2 Converter, Annex A
Up to 100 / 100 MbpsUp to 2 kmProfiles 17a / 30aAnnex A
The LevelOne VDS-1201 is an Ethernet over VDSL2 converter for Annex A installations, allowing Ethernet networking to run over an existing single pair of copper telephone wiring. It supports VDSL2 profiles 17a and 30a, with up to 100 Mbps downstream and 100 Mbps upstream at distances of up to 300 metres under suitable line conditions, while the VDSL connection itself can extend up to 2 km.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This exact VDS-1201 is the Annex A version intended for networks using PSTN telephone systems. Do not confuse it with the VDS-1202 Annex B model. A point-to-point VDSL2 connection requires compatible equipment at both ends, configured appropriately as Master/CO and Slave/CPE. The 100/100 Mbps figure applies at shorter line lengths; it should not be interpreted as guaranteed throughput at the maximum 2 km reach.
Best For
✓ Extending Ethernet over existing telephone wiring
✓ Annex A / PSTN-based installations
✓ Apartments, hotels and campus networks
✓ Voice, video and data network extensions
Key Features
Ethernet over one copper pair
VDSL2 technology lets the VDS-1201 reuse existing telephone-grade copper wiring to carry Ethernet traffic, avoiding a new Ethernet cable run in buildings where suitable copper is already installed.
100 Mbps up and down at up to 300 m
LevelOne specifies up to 100 Mbps downstream and 100 Mbps upstream at copper distances up to 300 metres. Longer VDSL2 links are supported, but available data rate decreases with distance and line quality.
Configurable VDSL2 operation
Four DIP switches provide configuration options including Master/Slave operation, VDSL2 profile selection, Fast or Interleaved mode, fixed data-rate behaviour and SNR margin settings.
Two Fast Ethernet LAN ports
Two 10/100 Mbps RJ45 LAN ports provide local Ethernet connectivity, while separate RJ11 connections handle the VDSL line and telephone pass-through.

Singular Expert Insight
The important buying detail with the VDS-1201 is the Annex A designation. Its basic performance is similar to the VDS-1202, but the telephone-network standard is different. Also keep the distance figures separate: LevelOne states up to 100/100 Mbps at 300 m and a maximum VDSL link reach of 2 km. A 2 km installation should therefore not be planned on the assumption that it will retain the maximum data rate.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You need an Annex A VDSL2 Ethernet extension over an existing copper telephone pair and want to reuse installed PSTN wiring rather than run new Ethernet cable.
Check first
Verify that Annex A is correct for the site, confirm compatible equipment is available at both ends and assess the length and quality of the existing copper pair.
Performance tip
For the best throughput, keep the copper run as short and clean as practical. Longer distances remain possible, but VDSL2 performance progressively depends more on cable quality and noise.
