MSI SPATIUM S270 480GB — 2.5" SATA SSD
480GBSATA III 6Gb/sUp to 500 MB/s read250 TB TBW
MSI SPATIUM S270 480GB is a 2.5-inch 7 mm SATA internal SSD on SATA III 6Gb/s (backward compatible with SATA II/I), rated up to 500 MB/s read and 450 MB/s write, built for replacing a hard drive in a laptop or desktop with a quick, quiet SATA SSD backed by a long warranty.
A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is the simplest upgrade there is for an older laptop or desktop that still boots from a hard drive: it uses the same SATA data and power connectors, so there is no new slot, no BIOS setting and no adapter card to worry about. What you get is a system that starts, opens programs and searches files in seconds instead of minutes, runs silently and survives the knocks that kill spinning disks.
Installation takes a few minutes: power down, unplug, remove the old drive or fit this one in a free bay, connect SATA data and power, and either clone your old system or install Windows fresh. After that there is nothing to maintain — Windows detects the SSD and turns off defragmentation automatically, and TRIM keeps write performance steady over the years. Keep at least 10–15% of the drive free; every SSD slows down and wears faster when it is run completely full.
What's in the Box
- MSI SPATIUM S270 480GB SSD (MSI does not list further accessories — no bracket or cable is included)
What It Means in Practice
- Plugs into any standard SATA data + power connector — the same cables your current 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive uses.
- Speed is capped by the SATA 6Gb/s interface (about 550 MB/s in practice); the big change compared with a hard drive is access time, not just MB/s.
- On a SATA II (3Gb/s) port it still works, but sequential speed drops to roughly half.
- 480GB formatted shows slightly less in Windows (decimal vs binary units) — this is normal for every drive.
What Will Not Work
- M.2-only laptops and mini PCs without a 2.5-inch drive bay — this drive needs a SATA bay and connector.
- External use on its own: to plug it in by USB you need a separate 2.5" USB enclosure or adapter.
- NVMe speeds: no SATA drive goes beyond the ~550 MB/s limit of the SATA interface.
Key Features
High random IOPS
Up to 55K read / 80K write 4K IOPS — the figure that makes boot and app launches feel instant.
LDPC error correction
Keeps data reliable as the 3D NAND wears over its rated 250 TB TBW.
Over-provisioning
Reserved flash space keeps write speed and endurance steady when the drive fills.
Low power
Max 2.0 W in operation and a few milliwatts in low-power states — good for laptop battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a bracket to fit it in a desktop?
Desktop cases with only 3.5-inch bays need a 2.5" to 3.5" mounting bracket, which is not included. Many current cases already have 2.5" mounting points.
Can I move my existing Windows installation onto it?
Yes. Connect it alongside the old drive (or through a USB adapter on a laptop) and clone with a disk-cloning tool, then swap the drives. A clean Windows install is the alternative if you prefer to start fresh.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The SPATIUM S270 stands out among SATA drives for its 5-year manufacturer term and published random IOPS — the numbers that matter for a boot drive. At 480GB it is a practical single-drive upgrade for a laptop or a second, fast drive for a desktop. Browse our
