The PLANET MGB-LX is a Gigabit SFP (mini-GBIC) module for single-mode fibre: 1000BASE-LX at 1310 nm over a dual LC/UPC connection, up to 20 km, with digital diagnostics. It is PLANET’s standard long-reach optic for links between buildings on its switches and media converters. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs single-mode fibre on two strands and an LX module at the far end. It is not a BiDi module — PLANET’s single-fibre pairs are MGB-LA/LB. It is rated 0 to 60 °C; the MGB-TLX is the industrial version, and MGB-L40 / L80 / L120 cover longer runs. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.

Digital diagnostics (DDM) let the host report temperature, laser power and received light, so a dirty connector or a failing link shows up before users call.
Hot-swappable
Modules and cables plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch or pull tab to remove it.
