The QNAP QDA-UMP4 is a 2.5-inch U.2 form-factor adapter that lets you install one M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD in a U.2 (SFF-8639) drive bay of a QNAP NAS or a PC. It is a cost-effective way to use consumer or prosumer M.2 SSDs in U.2 hot-swap bays, for example as SSD cache or a fast storage pool.
The adapter keeps the full PCIe 4.0 x4 link (backward compatible with PCIe 3.0), has an aluminium-alloy frame with thermal pads for heat dissipation, and needs no driver. It measures 100.4 × 69.85 × 15 mm and weighs 104.5 g.
Before you order: Your bay or backplane must be U.2 NVMe (SFF-8639). It will not work in SATA- or SAS-only bays. For a PC, QNAP advises confirming with the PC maker that U.2 NVMe is supported. QNAP also sells a newer QDA-UMP4A — a different part.

What It Means in Practice
- Reuse a fast M.2 NVMe SSD in a U.2 bay instead of buying a more expensive native U.2 drive.
- QNAP measured 5,381.8 MB/s read and 2,423.8 MB/s write in its lab (TDS-h2489FU with an IronWolf 525 SSD); results vary with the SSD and system.
- Works without drivers under QTS 4.4.1 or later, QuTS hero h4.5.1 or later, Windows 7/8.1/10/Server 2012 R2 and Ubuntu, per QNAP.
- When replacing a drive used in Qtier, disable Qtier first, as QNAP advises.
What Will Not Work
- M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported — NVMe (M-key) only.
- Only M.2 2280 length is supported; 2242, 2260 and 22110 are not listed.
- It will not work in a SATA- or SAS-only bay or backplane.
- A PCIe 4.0 SSD will run at PCIe 3.0 speed in a PCIe 3.0 bay.
