The ICY BOX IB-M2HS-701 from RaidSonic is a passive aluminium heatsink for one M.2 2280 SSD. A finned aluminium block sits on top of the drive and a flat cooling plate goes underneath, so heat from the controller and the NAND is carried away by metal instead of collecting under a paper label. The number that decides whether it will work in your machine is the height: the complete assembly stands 5 mm tall, low enough to clear graphics cards that hang directly over the first M.2 slot, where taller tower-style coolers simply will not go. Two silicone thermal pads come in the box, and both single-sided and double-sided modules are supported.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Fits M.2 2280 modules only (22 × 80 mm). RaidSonic publishes no support for 2230, 2242 or 2260 drives — a shorter module will not reach the mounting points. Single-sided and double-sided SSDs are both fine. If your motherboard already has its own bolted-on M.2 heat spreader over the slot, that shield has to come off first; the two cannot be stacked. This is a bare heatsink, so it does nothing on its own — you need an M.2 SSD, and note that no mounting screws are listed in the scope of delivery, so plan on reusing the standoff screw already in your motherboard slot. Key Features
Five millimetres — and that is the whole point
Most M.2 coolers fail on clearance rather than on cooling. At 5 mm assembled height the IB-M2HS-701 slides under graphics cards and into slots that sit beneath a GPU backplate, which is exactly where the hottest drives usually end up. Footprint is 70 × 21 mm, so it stays inside the outline of a 2280 module.
Two thermal pads, already in the box
RaidSonic supplies two blue silicone pads measuring 70 × 20 × 1 mm, rated at 1.5 W/mK and specified from −20 °C to roughly 180 °C. One goes between the drive and the heatsink, one between the drive and the base plate. You are not hunting for pads separately, and there is a spare surface if you ever re-seat the drive.
A base plate as well as a top block
Double-sided M.2 SSDs carry NAND packages on the underside, and a top-only heatsink leaves half the heat trapped against the motherboard. The IB-M2HS-701 clamps the drive between an upper finned block and a lower cooling plate, so both faces make contact. Single-sided drives are supported the same way.

Singular Expert Insight
Choose this one for clearance, not for record-breaking temperatures. A 5 mm passive block will not out-cool a 13 mm heat-pipe tower, but a 13 mm tower is useless in the slot beneath a graphics card — and that slot is where drives throttle most often. Buy the IB-M2HS-701 when the space above the M.2 slot is measured in millimetres, and buy a taller cooler when you have an open top slot to play with. If you are still choosing the drive itself, our internal SSDs range lists which models ship with their own heat spreader already fitted, and those need no separate cooler at all. For whole-system airflow, the CPU coolers section is the other half of the same problem — an M.2 drive sitting in stagnant air will still run warm no matter what metal is bolted to it.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
Your M.2 slot sits under a graphics card or in a slim case and you need a cooler no taller than 5 mm; your drive is a 2280 module, single- or double-sided; and you want the thermal pads supplied rather than sourced separately.
Skip it if
Your drive is 2242, 2260 or 2230 — it will not mount. Your motherboard already has a working M.2 shield on that slot. Or you have an open top slot with 15 mm of headroom, where a heat-pipe cooler will do more for a hot Gen5 drive.
Also consider
A taller heat-pipe M.2 cooler if clearance allows it, or an M.2 SSD that already ships with a factory heat spreader. For a drive in an external enclosure, cooling is the enclosure’s job and no separate heatsink is needed.
