Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB — double the endurance, double the DRAM
7,450 / 6,900 MB/s2 GB LPDDR4 DRAM1,200 TBWPCIe 4.0 ×4
The MZ-V9P2T0BW is Samsung’s 990 PRO at 2 TB — an M.2 2280 NVMe 2.0 drive on PCIe 4.0 ×4, reading at 7,450 MB/s and writing at 6,900 MB/s. At this capacity it carries 2 GB of onboard LPDDR4 DRAM and is rated at 1,200 TBW — both double the 1 TB model. This part number is the bare drive: 2.3 mm thick, no heatsink.
Compatibility — check before buying:
⭐ At 2 TB the 990 PRO is a better drive than at 1 TB, and not only because it is bigger. Three published figures improve with capacity:
• Endurance doubles: 1,200 TBW against 600 TBW at 1 TB.
• DRAM doubles: 2 GB of LPDDR4 against 1 GB.
• Random read rises: 1,400,000 IOPS at QD32, against 1,200,000 at 1 TB.
Sequential speeds are the same at both capacities. So if you are choosing between two 1 TB drives and one 2 TB, the 2 TB is the better engineering as well as the tidier setup.
⭐ Why the PRO rather than the 990 EVO Plus? DRAM. The PRO has 2 GB of its own LPDDR4 at this capacity; the EVO Plus is DRAM-less and borrows system memory. Peak speeds are close enough to ignore. What DRAM buys you is consistency: under sustained writing, heavy random access, or once the drive is nearly full, a DRAM drive holds performance where an HMB drive sags. Buy the PRO for consistency, not for peak.
⚠️ This is the bare drive — and the heatsink version has two part numbers at 2 TB as well. Samsung sells the 2 TB heatsink drive as MZ-V9P2T0CW (its German site) and MZ-V9P2T0GW (its UK site), with no published difference between them. If you want the heatsink, either is the same product.
⚠️ PlayStation 5. Samsung makes its PS5 statement only for the heatsink version: “The thin body is compatible with PlayStation® 5, desktops, and laptops meeting the PCI-SIG® D8 standard”, with the note that the D8 limit is 8.8 mm. Samsung makes no PS5 claim for this bare part number, and the console requires a heatsink this box does not contain — nor a mounting screw. For a PS5, buy the CW or GW version.
ℹ️ Controller name is not published. Samsung says only “Samsung in-house Controller” on the datasheet and every regional page. The codename that circulates in reviews is not a Samsung specification and we do not print it.
⚠️ Availability. Samsung UK shows the 2 TB as no longer available and Samsung Germany as “nicht verkäuflich”. The 9100 PRO has taken over as flagship. Treat this as channel stock — on a PCIe 4.0 board it remains exactly the right drive.

Best For
✓ A gaming or workstation PC with a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot
✓ Sustained heavy writing — video, virtual machines, large datasets
✓ Anyone choosing between two 1 TB drives and one 2 TB — take the 2 TB
✓ A build where the motherboard already provides an M.2 heatsink
Key Features
1,200 TBW — double the 1 TB model
Samsung warrants it for 5 years or 1,200 TBW, whichever comes first. Endurance scales with capacity, so the 2 TB is rated for twice the writing of the 1 TB.
2 GB of onboard LPDDR4 DRAM
Also double the 1 TB drive. This is the structural difference between the PRO and the DRAM-less 990 EVO Plus, and it shows under sustained and random-heavy work rather than in a benchmark headline.
1,400,000 read IOPS at QD32
Higher than the 1 TB model’s 1,200,000. Write is 1,550,000 IOPS at QD32; at QD1 the figures are 22,000 read and 80,000 write.
7,450 / 6,900 MB/s
Effectively the ceiling of PCIe 4.0 ×4 — the same sequential speeds as the 1 TB model.
⚠️ Bare drive — no heatsink, no screw
Samsung publishes “Installation Kit: Not Available”. Most motherboards supply their own M.2 screw and many now include an M.2 heatsink; a PlayStation 5 does not.

Singular Expert Insight
2 TB is the capacity at which the 990 PRO makes the most sense, and the reason is not just the space. Samsung doubles both the DRAM and the endurance at this capacity — 2 GB of LPDDR4 and 1,200 TBW against 1 GB and 600 TBW — and raises random read to 1,400,000 IOPS. Two 1 TB drives would give you the same total space with half the endurance headroom each and an extra M.2 slot occupied. Against the cheaper 990 EVO Plus, what you are buying is real onboard DRAM instead of borrowed system memory, which shows up as consistency under sustained load rather than as a higher peak number. Two practical notes. This is the bare drive, so check whether your motherboard already covers the M.2 slot — if it does, this is the right part; if it does not, or the drive is for a PlayStation 5, buy the heatsink version, which Samsung sells at 2 TB under both CW and GW codes with no published difference. And on a PCIe 4.0 board a Gen 5 drive would gain you nothing, so the 990 PRO is still exactly right there. Browse our internal SSD range.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You have a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot with its own heatsink and you want the fastest, most consistent Gen 4 drive Samsung makes, with double the endurance of the 1 TB.
Skip it if
The drive is destined for a PlayStation 5 or a bare motherboard slot (buy the heatsink CW/GW version), or it is a general games disk where the 990 EVO Plus costs less.
Also consider
The heatsink version (MZ-V9P2T0CW / GW) for a console or a bare slot, or the 9100 PRO if your motherboard has a PCIe 5.0 slot.
