Samsung BAR Plus 256 GB — 400 MB/s read over USB-A 3.1

256 GB400 MB/s readUSB-A 3.1Metal body

The MUF-256BE4/APC is Samsung’s BAR Plus USB Flash Drive at 256 GB in titan grey. Samsung rates it at 400 MB/s sequential read and 110 MB/s write at this capacity, over a standard USB Type-A connector on USB 3.1 Gen 1. BAR Plus is the metal-bodied drive in Samsung’s range, built around a solid casing with a keyring loop rather than a plastic shell. It measures 40.05 × 15.46 × 12.02 mm and weighs about 10.9 g.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things about the published figures. First, the 110 MB/s write appears only in Samsung’s datasheet — its regional product pages quote read speed alone. We publish it and tell you where it comes from. Second, watch the temperature numbers: Samsung’s product pages show −25 to 85 °C, but that is the temperature-proof durability claim, not an operating range. The datasheet gives the actual operating range as 0 to 60 °C. Listings that print −25 to 85 as the operating spec have confused the two.

Best For

✓ Carrying large files between machines
✓ A drive that lives on a keyring and takes abuse
✓ Backing up documents and photos off a laptop
✓ Anyone who has broken a plastic flash drive before

Key Features

400 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write
Fast enough that copying a large video file off the drive takes seconds rather than minutes. Note the write figure is the datasheet’s — Samsung’s product pages quote read speed only, which is why so many listings show no write speed at all.

A metal body, and that is the point
The whole argument for BAR Plus over a cheaper drive is the casing. Solid metal with an integrated keyring loop, rated to 1,500 G of shock — a plastic drive on a keyring in a pocket does not survive long.

256 GB is where write speed doubles
Samsung’s 128 GB drive writes at 60 MB/s; this one writes at 110. If you regularly copy large files onto the drive rather than just reading from it, that difference is the reason to step up a capacity.

Five-proof, on Samsung’s own tests
Water to 1 m for 72 hours in saltwater, shock to 1,500 G, magnetism to 15,000 gauss, airport X-ray to 100 mGy, and a temperature survival claim from −25 to 85 °C. Samsung cites no external standard for any of these.

Five-year manufacturer term
Samsung warrants this line for five years — longer than most flash drives on the shelf, and a reasonable proxy for how it expects the metal casing to hold up.

Technical Specifications

Identification
Brand Samsung — first-party USB flash drive
Product Line BAR Plus USB Flash Drive
Part Number (MPN) MUF-256BE4/APC
EAN / GTIN 8801643230678
Colour Titan Gray
Capacity & Interface
Capacity 256 GB
Interface USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Samsung’s datasheet calls the same interface USB 3.2 Gen 1 — 5 Gbps either way, different naming vintage)
Connector USB Type-A
Backward Compatible Yes — works in USB 2.0 ports at USB 2.0 speed
Performance
Sequential Read 400 MB/s
Sequential Write 110 MB/s — datasheet figure; Samsung’s product pages publish read speed only
Capacity Ladder 64 GB = 300 / 30 MB/s · 128 GB = 400 / 60 · 256 GB = 400 / 110 · 512 GB = 400 / 110
Why This Matters Write speed roughly doubles from 128 GB to 256 GB in this range. If you copy large files onto the drive rather than just read from it, the bigger drive is meaningfully quicker, not merely larger.
Five-Proof Durability
Water Up to 1 m for up to 72 hours in 3% saltwater
Shock Up to 1,500 G
Temperature (proof claim) −25 °C to 85 °C — this is the survival claim, not the operating range
Magnetism Up to 15,000 gauss
X-ray Up to 100 mGy (airport scanner level)
Operating Temperature 0 °C to 60 °C (datasheet); storage −10 to 70 °C
Standards Cited None. These are Samsung’s own test claims; no IEC, IPX or ISO standard is referenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the write speed not appear on other listings?
Because Samsung publishes it only in its datasheet, not on the product pages most retailers copy from. It is 110 MB/s at 256 GB. At 128 GB it is 60 MB/s, and at 64 GB just 30 — a real difference that rarely gets mentioned.
Can I use it in a USB 2.0 port?
Yes, it is backward compatible — but you will get USB 2.0 speeds, which is roughly a tenth of what the drive can do. To see 400 MB/s you need a USB 3.0 port or better.
What is the actual operating temperature?
0 to 60 °C per Samsung’s datasheet. The −25 to 85 °C figure you will see quoted is Samsung’s temperature-proof survival claim, not a range for use. Listings that present it as an operating spec have mixed the two up.
Is anything else in the box?
Samsung does not publish box contents for this part number, so we will not claim a lanyard, a cap or anything else. Ask us and we will look at the box before shipping.
How does it compare with FIT Plus?
Identical speeds and identical five-proof claims. The difference is physical: BAR Plus is a 10.9 g metal stick with a keyring loop; FIT Plus is a 3 g stub designed to stay permanently in a laptop or a car stereo.
Singular Expert Insight
At 256 GB the three Samsung flash drive lines — BAR Plus, FIT Plus and the Type-C drive — are the same drive inside: 400 MB/s read, 110 MB/s write, the same five-proof claims, the same five-year term. Choose entirely on shape and connector. BAR Plus is the one to buy if the drive travels: metal body, keyring loop, and enough mass that you notice it in a pocket rather than putting it through the wash. If it is going to live plugged into a laptop or a car, the FIT Plus stub is the better shape, and if your machine only has USB-C, the Type-C drive saves you an adapter. Browse the rest of our USB flash drives, or our SD and microSD cards if the storage is going into a camera or a phone.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want a fast 256 GB drive that survives being carried — metal body, keyring loop, five-year manufacturer term.

Skip it if

The drive will live permanently plugged into a laptop or car (FIT Plus is the better shape), or your machine has only USB-C ports.

Also consider

FIT Plus at the same speed in a much smaller body, the Type-C version if you need USB-C, or a microSD card if the storage is going into a phone or camera.
