SanDisk microSD Express 512GB — 880 MB/s read over PCIe NVMe

880 MB/s read650 MB/s writePCIe Gen 3 NVMeNintendo Switch 2 ready

The SanDisk microSD Express 512GB card, part number SDSQXFN-512G-GN4NN, is the largest capacity in a card standard that abandons the UHS-I bus entirely. It runs PCIe Gen 3 with the NVMe protocol — the interface inside an SSD — at 880 MB/s read and 650 MB/s write. It is the card standard the Nintendo Switch 2 requires for game storage, and 512 GB is the size that holds a real library.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The Express speed only appears on a microSD Express host. The card is backward compatible and works in any ordinary microSD slot, but there it runs at UHS-I speeds like every other card — a phone, a camera or a first-generation Switch cannot use the PCIe interface. The hosts that can are the Nintendo Switch 2 and readers built for microSD Express. Write speed does not rise above 256 GB: SanDisk publishes 480 MB/s at 128 GB and 650 MB/s at 256 GB and above, so this card writes the same as the 256 GB one. No SD adapter is included, and a passive adapter could not carry the Express signalling anyway. In the box: the card alone.

Best For

✓ Nintendo Switch 2 game storage
✓ A large installed library without deleting games
✓ Devices that specifically name microSD Express
✓ Moving a big library onto a card in one sitting
✓ Use with a microSD Express reader
✓ Buyers choosing the current card standard

Key Features

512 GB is where an Express card stops being a stopgap
Switch 2 titles are large, and at 128 GB a card fills quickly enough that you are back to choosing what to delete. At this capacity the card holds a genuine library, which is the reason to pay for the top size rather than the entry one.

PCIe NVMe rather than UHS-I
An ordinary microSD is bounded by the UHS-I bus at 104 MB/s. This card leaves that behind and uses PCIe Gen 3 with NVMe, the same interface as an internal SSD. It is not a faster version of the same thing — it is a different category of card in the same shape.

650 MB/s write, the same as 256 GB
SanDisk publishes 480 MB/s write at 128 GB and 650 from 256 GB upwards. So this card writes as fast as the 256 GB one and no faster — what the extra capacity buys is room, which at Switch 2 game sizes is the thing that actually runs out.

Rated for a console that travels
Waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnet-proof, X-ray-proof and wear-out-proof, over -25 to 85 degrees Celsius. A handheld console card lives in a bag, and that is what the rating is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 512 GB faster than the 256 GB?
No. Both read 880 MB/s and both write 650. The write ladder rises from 480 MB/s at 128 GB and then stops, so between 256 GB and 512 GB you are buying capacity alone — which, for Switch 2 game sizes, is usually the right thing to buy.
Do I need this for a Nintendo Switch 2?
For storing games, yes. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express and will not use an ordinary microSD for that purpose, however fast the old card claims to be. If you have the original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED, the Nintendo-licensed UHS-I cards are what you want instead.
Will it make my phone or old Switch faster?
No. Those devices use the UHS-I bus at 104 MB/s and the card falls back to that speed in them. It works perfectly well as an ordinary card, but you would be paying for an interface the device cannot reach.
Does it come with an SD adapter?
No, and a passive adapter would not help: it cannot carry the PCIe signalling that makes this card fast. To use it at full speed on a computer you need a reader that supports microSD Express.
Singular Expert Insight
Between the three Express capacities we stock, this is the one to buy if the card is going into a Switch 2 and staying there. Read speed is 880 MB/s across the line and write plateaus at 650 from 256 GB, so the 512 GB card is not quicker — it simply holds enough that you stop managing the library. The caution is unchanged and worth repeating: the PCIe interface needs a host that supports it, which today means a Switch 2 or an Express reader, and in a phone or an original Switch this behaves like an ordinary UHS-I card at several times the price. For the original Switch family, the licensed cards are correct. See the rest of our memory cards, or ask about card readers that support Express.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You have a Nintendo Switch 2 and want a library rather than a stopgap — 512 GB at 880 MB/s read and 650 MB/s write, on the card standard the console requires.

Skip it if

Your device is a phone, camera, drone or original Switch — none can use the Express interface, and a cheaper Extreme card performs identically in them.

Also consider

The 256 GB Express card writes at the same 650 MB/s for less. For the original Switch family, the Nintendo-licensed SDSQXAO cards are the correct choice.
