SanDisk High Endurance 256GB microSDXC — 20,000 hours of Full HD recording

20,000 recording hours at 256 GB100 MB/s read40 MB/s writeU3 · V30

The SanDisk High Endurance 256GB microSDXC card, part number SDSQQNR-256G-GN6IA, is built for cameras that never stop recording. A dashcam or a security camera overwrites its card continuously, day after day, which destroys ordinary cards long before their speed becomes a problem. SanDisk rates this one for 20,000 hours of Full HD recording at 256 GB, with 100 MB/s read, 40 MB/s write and V30 for smooth video.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the hours figure against the capacity you are buying. SanDisk product pages display “up to 40,000 hours” on every capacity in this line, but its datasheet gives a per-capacity ladder and 40,000 hours belongs to the 512 GB card. At 256 GB the rated figure is 20,000 hours. That is still more than two years of continuous recording, and it is the number this page publishes. An SD adapter is included. This is an endurance card, not a speed card — the 40 MB/s write is well below the Extreme line, which is the trade for its lifespan. In the box: the card and the SD adapter.

Best For

✓ Dashcams recording on a loop
✓ Home and business security cameras
✓ Body cameras and continuous monitoring
✓ Devices that overwrite their card every day
✓ Vehicles left in Cyprus summer heat
✓ Anyone replacing dashcam cards too often

Key Features

20,000 hours at this capacity, not 40,000
The endurance rating in this line doubles with each capacity step: 2,500 hours at 32 GB, 5,000 at 64 GB, 10,000 at 128 GB, 20,000 at 256 GB and 40,000 at 512 GB. We publish the figure for the card you are actually buying, because the headline number on the manufacturer page is the same on every capacity and only true for the largest one.

Endurance is a different specification from speed
A dashcam writes over the same card continuously, so what fails is not speed but the number of write cycles the memory can absorb. This card is built for that pattern. An Extreme card writing 130 MB/s will outrun it on paper and wear out first in a dashcam — the two are designed for different jobs.

V30 and U3 for smooth footage
V30 guarantees at least 30 MB/s of sustained write, which is what stops a dashcam dropping frames in the exact moment you needed it. The card writes up to 40 MB/s, so the guarantee has margin rather than sitting at the limit.

Rated to 85 degrees Celsius
Operating range runs from -25 to 85 degrees, which matters for a card that spends July on a windscreen. The card is also rated temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof and X-ray-proof. None of that protects the footage itself, so pull the important clips off before the loop overwrites them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does SanDisk website say 40,000 hours and this page say 20,000?
Because the 40,000-hour figure belongs to the 512 GB card. SanDisk datasheet gives a ladder that doubles with capacity, and 256 GB is rated at 20,000 hours. We publish the figure for the card in front of you rather than the largest number in the family.
Is a High Endurance card really different from an ordinary microSD?
Yes, in the part you cannot see. Endurance describes how many times the memory can be overwritten before it wears out, which is the failure mode for anything that records on a loop. A fast Extreme card will write video perfectly well and reach the end of its useful life far sooner in a dashcam.
How long is 20,000 hours in practice?
Continuous, twenty-four hours a day, that is over two years. For a dashcam that only records while you drive, at two hours a day it is more than twenty years of driving — longer than the camera will last. The rating is a wear budget, not an expiry date.
Should I buy this or the MAX Endurance card?
MAX Endurance is the longer-lived line: at 128 GB it is rated 60,000 hours against 10,000 for High Endurance at the same size, and it carries a longer manufacturer term. Buy MAX Endurance for a camera that records every hour of every day; High Endurance is enough for a dashcam that runs while you drive.
Singular Expert Insight
The single most common mistake on this product is buying it on speed. An Extreme microSD reads 190 MB/s against this card 100, and in a dashcam that difference means nothing while the endurance rating means everything — loop recording is exactly the workload that wears flash memory out. The second most common mistake is trusting the 40,000-hour headline, which appears on every capacity page in this line and applies only to the 512 GB card; at 256 GB the rated figure is 20,000 hours. If your camera records around the clock rather than only while driving, look at the MAX Endurance line instead, which we also stock. Browse our other memory cards or tell us the camera model and we will size the card for it.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You are buying for a dashcam or a security camera that records on a loop, and you want a card rated for the wear that causes — 20,000 hours at this capacity, with V30 for smooth footage and an SD adapter included.

Skip it if

You want a card for photos, 4K action footage or a phone — the 40 MB/s write and 100 MB/s read make this the wrong choice, and the Extreme line is faster for the same money.

Also consider

The MAX Endurance line, SDSQQVR, is rated far longer for cameras that record around the clock. For photography and 4K, the Extreme microSD SDSQXAV is the faster card.
