STAEDTLER 146C Coloured Pencils — Metal Case of 72 Colours
72 coloursSoft, blendable leadHexagonalMetal case
The STAEDTLER 146C coloured pencil set (146C M72) is a metal case of 72 hexagonal coloured pencils in assorted colours, with a soft, highly pigmented lead made for dry colouring, shading and blending — for hobby artists, students, designers and adult colouring.
The soft lead lays down strong colour with little pressure and blends smoothly when you layer one colour over another. The pencils are made in Germany from PEFC-certified wood, and the metal case keeps all 72 colours sorted and protected on the desk or in a bag.
What's in the Box
- 72 × STAEDTLER 146C coloured pencils, assorted colours
- 1 × metal storage case
- No sharpener included (STAEDTLER recommends Mars 510 25 or Noris 512 002)
What It Means in Practice
- 72 colours cover subtle shades, so you blend less to hit the right tone
- Soft lead is ideal for layering and smooth gradients
- Hexagonal shape does not roll off a sloped desk
- The metal case doubles as long-term storage
What Will Not Work
- Watercolour effects — this is a dry-technique pencil, not water-soluble (STAEDTLER’s watercolour lines are separate)
- Metallic or neon effects — those are different STAEDTLER sets
- Fine technical drafting — use graphite or mechanical pencils for that
- Refill of single colours from this set code — single pencils are sold separately where available

Frequently Asked Questions
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Seventy-two colours in a metal case is the point where a pencil set stops limiting you: there is almost always a shade close to what you need, and the soft lead fills the gaps when you layer. Pair it with a quality sharpener — soft leads break in cheap ones. More art and stationery is in our office stationery range.
✓ Buy it if you want a large, soft, blendable coloured pencil palette for drawing, design or colouring.
✕ Skip it if you need water-soluble or metallic effects.
→ Also consider STAEDTLER ergosoft 157 coloured pencils (157 M36) for a triangular grip.
