STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph digital jumbo — EMR Stylus Pencil with Digital Eraser
EMR · no battery4,096 pressure levels0.7 mm exchangeable nibSoft digital eraser
The STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph digital jumbo (180J 22-3) is a battery-free EMR stylus that looks and feels like a classic Mars Lumograph wooden pencil, with a thick triangular body, a 0.7 mm exchangeable nib, 4,096 pressure levels and a soft digital eraser on the end — made for people who write, sketch or annotate on an EMR tablet or e-ink notebook.
It uses an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) lead developed with Wacom, so it draws power from the screen itself: no charging, no pairing, no app to install. You pick it up and write, much like the S Pen that ships with a Galaxy Tab, but in a larger, warmer-feeling wooden body that many people find easier to hold for long note-taking sessions.
Before you order: This pen only works on screens with an EMR digitizer. It does not work on iPad or iPhone. Check that your exact model is on STAEDTLER's list before ordering — send us the model number and we will check it for you.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Mars Lumograph digital jumbo EMR stylus pencil (180J 22-3)
- 5 × replacement nibs
- 1 × nib-change tool
- Cardboard retail box
What It Means in Practice
- Write and sketch the moment you pick it up — there is no battery to charge and nothing to pair, so it never runs flat in the middle of a meeting.
- The triangular jumbo body (approx. 9.1 mm thick) guides your fingers into a relaxed tripod grip, which helps with longer writing sessions and with younger writers.
- Pressure sensitivity (4,096 levels), palm rejection and the eraser work in apps that support them — e.g. Samsung Notes, the reMarkable and BOOX note apps; in an app without eraser support the eraser end simply does nothing.
- Nibs wear with use, especially on matte or paper-feel screen protectors; five spares and the tool are in the box, and further packs (18022 SN) are available.
What Will Not Work
- Apple iPad, iPhone and Google Pixelbook — STAEDTLER states they use a different display technology; for iPad you need an Apple Pencil or an iPad-specific stylus.
- Screens that are touch-only (capacitive) with no EMR digitizer — the pen will not register at all. Some laptop and tablet models are sold with and without EMR, so check the exact model number.
- Devices that use other active-pen systems such as Microsoft Pen Protocol (Surface Pro 3 and later) or Wacom AES — only Surface Pro 1 and Pro 2 are on STAEDTLER's list.
- reMarkable Paper Pro, reMarkable Move, Kobo e-readers and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold are not on the current compatibility list.
- It has no side button, so S Pen Air Actions, button shortcuts and Bluetooth remote functions are not available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work on my Samsung Galaxy Tab?
Galaxy Tab S3 through S10 (including FE, Plus and Ultra models) are on STAEDTLER's list; on the Tab S3 the eraser function is not supported. If your tablet came with an S Pen, it supports EMR.
Does it replace the S Pen completely?
For writing, drawing, pressure and erasing — yes, in supporting apps. It has no button, so Air Actions and button shortcuts are not available.
Does it work with the reMarkable Paper Pro?
No. reMarkable 1 and reMarkable 2 are listed; Paper Pro and Move are not.
What is the difference from the Noris digital jumbo?
Same technology, size and features; the Mars Lumograph version comes in the blue Mars Lumograph design.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
An EMR pencil like this is the simplest upgrade for an S Pen tablet or e-ink notebook: nothing to charge and a much more comfortable grip than the slim pen that came with the device. The one thing to get right is compatibility — EMR is not the same as the active pens used by iPad or most current Surface models. If your device is EMR-based, browse our
tablet accessories for cases and protectors that go with it.
✓ Buy it if you use a Galaxy Tab S, reMarkable 2, BOOX or Supernote and want a thicker, pencil-like pen with an eraser.
✕ Skip it if you own an iPad, a Surface Pro 3 or newer, or any touch-only screen.
→ Also consider the Noris digital jumbo (same pen in the yellow-black Noris look) or the slimmer, hexagonal Noris digital mini.
Not sure your device has EMR? Send us the exact model number and we will check it against STAEDTLER's list before you order.
