The StarTech.com ST1000PEXPSE is a 2.5G PoE+ PCIe network card that adds a 2.5 Gigabit RJ45 port to a desktop PC, workstation or server through a PCIe 2.1 x1 slot. It sends power down the network cable: the RJ45 port supplies PoE+ to a camera, access point or phone while carrying 2.5G data. It uses the Realtek RTL8125B controller and connects at 10/100/1000/2500 Mbps. Full-height and low-profile brackets. A dedicated network card is the usual fix when the onboard port has failed, when the machine needs a second, separate network, or when it should move to a faster link than the motherboard offers.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Check the slot: the card needs a free PCIe slot; as an x1 card it also fits x4, x8 and x16 slots. Both a full-height and a low-profile bracket are supplied, so it suits standard towers and slim (SFF) cases. 2.5 Gbps needs a 2.5G partner: the switch or router port must support 2.5GBASE-T, otherwise the link runs at 1 Gbps. Cat5e cable is enough. PoE needs internal power — connect a SATA 15-pin or SP4 4-pin lead from the PC power supply. Windows Server is not on the published OS list.
