The StarTech.com SFP1000ZXST is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for very long single-mode fibre runs: it works at 1550 nm over an LC duplex connection and StarTech.com rates it up to 80 km, with digital diagnostics. It is 100% MSA uncoded, so it suits the many switches and routers that accept standard SFP modules, for links between sites, campuses and carrier handover points. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a 1G ZX optic: the far end must also be a 1550 nm ZX module — it will not link to a 1310 nm LX module, and it will not come up in a 10G-only SFP+ port. It is uncoded, so Cisco, HPE/Aruba and other switches that lock out third-party optics may refuse it. StarTech.com’s own datasheet gives 80 km in the spec table and 70 km in a feature line; for links near that limit, or very short test links, tell us the distance first. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Frequently Asked Questions

70 km or 80 km?
StarTech.com lists 80 km in the datasheet spec table and 70 km in a feature line of the same document. Treat 70 km as the safe planning figure and send us the fibre length and loss if the link is longer.
Can I use it for a short link?
A long-reach 1550 nm optic sends a strong signal; on a short run the receiver can be overloaded. Tell us the distance and we advise whether an LX module or an attenuator is the better choice.
Are fibre patch cords included?
No. You get 1 module. The patch cord for the LC duplex connector, a matching module for the far end of the link and a fibre cleaning tool are bought separately. Tell us the distance and the fibre type and we quote the right cord.
Will it work in a switch from another brand?
StarTech.com builds this module 100% MSA-uncoded. Switches that accept uncoded modules, such as Ubiquiti, D-Link, NETGEAR, Supermicro and TP-Link, take it; switches that lock out third-party optics, such as Cisco, HPE/Aruba or Juniper, may refuse it — send us the model and we check it.
