The StarTech.com SFPG1320C is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 20 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection, with digital diagnostics. It is programmed as a Cisco GLC-LH-SMD, so Cisco Catalyst, industrial IE and Firepower devices that check optics accept it. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It is coded as a Cisco GLC-LH-SMD, for Cisco switches, industrial IE switches and Firepower appliances. StarTech.com rates it for 20 km on single-mode fibre. It is a 1G optic, so it will not link to a 10G LR module, and it will not work on multimode fibre. For switches that take uncoded optics, the SFP1000LXST is the MSA version. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
