Compatibility — check before buying:
This is the thing to be clear about before ordering: the connector is modern USB-C but the hub is USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps. An external SSD or a fast card reader will work but at roughly a tenth of the speed of a 5 Gbps hub — if you want speed, StarTech’s HB30C4AB is the same shape and colour at 5 Gbps, and the two sit side by side in the catalogue. Per-port output is 2.5 W (500 mA), half that of a USB 3.x hub, so bus-powered drives may not spin up. There is no power input and no Power Delivery, and no USB-A adapter is included. Is this as fast as a normal USB 3.0 hub?
No, and it is not meant to be. The connector is USB-C but the hub runs USB 2.0 at up to 480 Mbps, roughly a tenth of a 5 Gbps hub. For a mouse, a keyboard, a receiver, a dongle or a printer that is completely irrelevant — none of them uses a fraction of it. For an external drive or a fast card reader it very much is relevant, and StarTech’s HB30C4AB is the 5 Gbps version of the same idea. Decide by what you plug in, not by the connector.
Can I run an external hard drive from it?
Probably not, and the number tells you why: 2.5 W per port, which is 500 mA at 5 V. A bus-powered 2.5-inch drive typically wants close to double that at spin-up. Flash drives, card readers and low-draw peripherals are fine. If storage is the reason for the hub, choose a 5 Gbps model with a higher per-port allowance, or a mains-powered one. Which model codes am I likely to confuse it with?
Two, and they are one letter apart. ST4200MINI and ST4200MINI2 are USB-A host versions of the same four-port USB 2.0 hub — they will not plug into a USB-C-only laptop. Only ST4200MINI**C** has the USB-C plug. Separately, HB30C4AB is the USB-C hub at 5 Gbps rather than 480 Mbps. Order by the full part number.
