The StarTech.com HBS304A24A lets four computers take turns with the same four USB devices — a printer, scanner, drive, keyboard and mouse set or a licence dongle — at the press of a wired remote button, at USB 3.0 speed. It is for the office or workshop where a desktop, a laptop and a test machine all need the same peripherals but nobody wants to move cables. Four USB cables are included so it works out of the box.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a USB switch, not a KVM: it carries no video, so it does not switch a monitor. Only one computer at a time sees the devices; switching is by the button on the 1.8 m remote (StarTech publishes no hotkey or software switching). The switch takes power from the connected computers; StarTech says a 5 V / 2 A adapter on the Micro-B input may be needed for high-power peripherals or when fewer than four hosts are on, and that adapter is not included. Each device port supplies 4.5 W.
