StarTech.com Cat6 RJ45 Keystone Jack Network Coupler — Female to Female

RJ-45 female to femaleCat6 ratedKeystone snap-in formatLifetime warranty

The StarTech.com Cat6 RJ45 Keystone Jack Network Coupler, product ID C6KEYCOUPLER, is a small RJ-45 female-to-female coupler in the keystone format. It does two jobs. Inline, it joins two Cat6 patch cables end to end to make a longer run when the cable you have is a metre short of where it needs to go. Mounted, it snaps into a standard keystone wall plate, surface box or patch panel, turning a cable pulled through a wall into a proper terminated outlet without crimping or punching down — you simply plug an existing patch cord into the back. It is rated for Cat6, and StarTech.com backs it with a lifetime warranty. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
A coupler is a legitimate tool used within limits, and the limit is worth stating. Every coupler adds a connector pair to the channel, and the TIA channel model allows only a small number of connection points before the crosstalk and return-loss budget is spent — typically four. One coupler in a channel is normal; two or three in series is how a link stops certifying, and the symptom is not a dead connection but a marginal one: a gigabit link that negotiates at 100 Mbps, or errors under load. Use it to extend a patch run or to terminate a pulled cable into a plate, and use a proper keystone jack punched down onto solid-core cable for a permanent horizontal link. It is unshielded, so in a shielded (S/FTP) installation it breaks the shield continuity — specify a shielded coupler there. StarTech.com does not publish a separate frequency or performance figure beyond the Cat6 rating.
Key Features

Keystone format — snaps into a plate or panel
The standard keystone footprint fits ordinary wall plates, surface-mount boxes and keystone patch panels. That is what lets you turn a cable coming out of a wall into a tidy, labelled outlet without a punch-down tool or a crimping die.

Joins two patch cables into a longer run
The straightforward use: the cable reaches the doorway and the switch is two metres past it. Rather than replacing a good cable with a longer one, a coupler and a short patch cord bridge the gap in seconds.

Cat6 rated
Built to Category 6 rather than repurposed Cat5e hardware. On a Gigabit or multi-gigabit link the connector is where crosstalk margin is won or lost, so the rating of the coupler matters as much as the rating of the cable either side of it.

Female to female, tool-free
Both ends take an ordinary RJ-45 plug. No crimping, no punch-down block, no wire map to get wrong — which makes it the right thing to keep in a bag for temporary runs, events and fault-finding as well as permanent installs.

Small and light — 5 g
It disappears into a wall box or sits unobtrusively behind furniture, and it costs nothing to carry a couple of spares. For a part whose whole purpose is convenience, that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a coupler slow the connection down?
Not by itself, but it uses up margin. Each connector pair in a channel adds crosstalk and return loss, and the TIA model allows only about four connection points before the budget is spent. One coupler in an otherwise clean link is fine. Chaining several is where a Gigabit link quietly drops to 100 Mbps or starts throwing errors under load.
What is a keystone jack?
A standardised snap-in module format. Wall plates, surface boxes and patch panels are made with rectangular keystone openings, and any keystone module — an RJ-45 jack, a coupler like this one, an HDMI or USB pass-through — clicks into them. It is what makes structured cabling modular.
Can I use it instead of a punch-down jack in a wall plate?
For a quick or temporary outlet, yes — and it needs no tools. For a permanent horizontal link the correct answer is still a punch-down keystone jack terminated onto solid-core cable, because that is what the standards assume and what a certifier will test. A coupler in a plate expects a patch cord behind it, which is fine for a short drop and wrong for an in-wall run.
Will it work with shielded cable?
It is an unshielded coupler, so it breaks shield continuity in an S/FTP or F/UTP installation. In a shielded system that defeats the point of the shielding at that connection, so specify a shielded coupler instead. On ordinary UTP cabling it is exactly right.
Singular Expert Insight
Couplers have a slightly bad reputation, and it is only half deserved. What earns it is misuse: joining three patch cords with two couplers to reach across a room, then wondering why the link negotiates at 100 Mbps. The TIA channel model is explicit that connection points are a finite budget, and every coupler spends some of it. Used properly — one in a channel, bridging a run that is a metre short, or snapped into a plate to give a pulled cable a tidy outlet — it is a perfectly legitimate part and far better than the alternatives, which are a taut cable or a replacement run. The keystone format is what makes this particular one useful, because it lives equally well inline in a cable manager and inside a wall plate. Pair it with hardware from our network switches range, and see our routers section for the rest of a small network installation.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You need to join two Cat6 patch cables to bridge a short gap, or to snap a tool-free RJ-45 outlet into a keystone wall plate, surface box or patch panel.

Skip it if

You are terminating a permanent in-wall horizontal run — use a punch-down keystone jack on solid-core cable. Also skip it in a shielded (S/FTP) installation, which needs a shielded coupler.

Also consider

Punch-down Cat6 keystone jacks for permanent terminations, keystone wall plates and surface-mount boxes to hold this coupler, or longer Cat6 patch cables where a single run is the better answer.
