The StarTech.com ST1000SMPEX is a Mini PCIe Gigabit Ethernet card that adds a Gigabit RJ45 port to a mini PC, embedded board or industrial PC through a Mini PCIe slot. The Mini PCIe card connects by cable to a small RJ45 daughter board that mounts in a low-profile bracket opening, so a system without a free PCIe slot can still get a Gigabit port. It uses the Realtek RTL8111H controller and connects at 10/100/1000 Mbps. A dedicated network card is the usual fix when the onboard port has failed, when the machine needs a second, separate network, or when it should move to a faster link than the motherboard offers.
