The StarTech.com 10051-ST is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for multimode fibre, reaching up to 550 m at 850 nm over an LC duplex connection. It is programmed to identify as an Extreme Networks 10051, so Extreme switches and routers that check optics accept it, and it supports digital diagnostics. It is a lower-cost way to add or replace 1G fibre links inside a building on an Extreme network. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.

It is coded as an Extreme Networks 10051. StarTech.com does not list specific Extreme models, so send us yours before you order. It is a multimode SX optic — for single-mode runs between buildings the 10052-ST is the LX version (1310 nm, 10 km), and the two will not link to each other. It is 1G only and will not run in a 10G-only SFP+ port. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
