Targus CityGear TCG661GL — 14–15.6″ Convertible Laptop Backpack, Black
Backpack or briefcaseFits 14–15.6″ laptopsDome Protection SystemLimited Lifetime Warranty
The Targus CityGear TCG661GL is a black convertible bag for laptops of 14 to 15.6 inches: detach and stow the shoulder straps and it carries as a briefcase by its low-profile side handle, put them back on and it is a backpack again. Underneath the versatility it is a proper Targus commuter bag, built around the Dome Protection System — shock-absorbing layers integrated into the body that dissipate impact pressure rather than passing it to the laptop and tablet inside. There are separate laptop and tablet compartments, zipped mesh pockets so you can see what you are carrying, a comfort-padded grab handle, padded shoulder straps and a trolley strap for rolling luggage. Targus lists it at 32 x 11 x 46.5 cm and 0.98 kg in nylon and polyester, with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The conversion is backpack to briefcase — the straps detach and stow away, and you carry it by the side handle. It does not become a tote or a messenger bag, and there is no shoulder strap for one-shoulder carry. Note that Targus itself is slightly inconsistent here: its bullet list calls the side handle “retractable” while the description calls it “low-profile”. Three claims Targus does not make for this bag and which get copied in from other Targus lines: no water-resistance claim of any kind — not even a water-resistant base — no checkpoint-friendly design, and no USB charging port. Targus also publishes no litre capacity, no denier and no maximum tablet size for this model, so we quote none.
Best For
✓ Days that start on a bicycle or train and end in a meeting
✓ Carrying a 14″ or 15.6″ laptop plus a tablet
✓ Anyone who wants one bag for casual and formal settings
✓ Commuters who value shock absorption over extra pockets
✓ Stacking a bag on rolling luggage for travel
✓ Buyers who want a lifetime warranty on the bag itself
Key Features
Backpack one minute, briefcase the next
The padded shoulder straps detach and stow neatly away, leaving a clean-sided bag you carry by its low-profile side handle. It is the practical answer to arriving at a client meeting on a bag that looked right for the commute.
Dome Protection System
Shock-absorbing layers are built into the bag to dissipate impact pressure across the structure instead of transmitting it to the devices inside. Targus designed it for the everyday commuter crush, and it covers the tablet as well as the laptop.
Separate laptop and tablet compartments
Each device gets its own compartment rather than sharing one padded sleeve, so a tablet cannot press against the laptop screen. Targus rates the laptop bay for 14 to 15.6 inch machines.
Organisation you can see into
Zipped mesh pockets and compartments let you find a cable without emptying the bag, and a comfort-padded grab handle takes it off a security belt. A trolley strap slides it onto rolling luggage. Empty weight is 0.98 kg.

Singular Expert Insight
Convertible bags usually compromise on both modes. This one does better than most because the briefcase mode is not an afterthought: the straps stow completely and the side handle sits flush, so it genuinely reads as a case rather than a backpack with its straps tucked in. What you give up compared with a dedicated backpack is capacity data — Targus publishes no litre figure here — and any weather protection at all, which is the honest caveat on the whole CityGear line. If you never actually need briefcase mode, the plain TCG660GL is the simpler buy. If your day changes shape between leaving home and arriving at a client, this is the reason the model exists. Browse the rest of our laptop cases and backpacks, or the laptops range if you are matching a machine to a bag.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You carry a 14″ or 15.6″ laptop and a tablet, and you want one bag that is a backpack on the commute and a briefcase in the meeting, with built-in shock absorption and a Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Skip it if
You need water resistance, a checkpoint-friendly design, a USB port or a published capacity figure. Targus claims none of these for this model. If you never need briefcase mode you are paying for a feature you will not use.
Also consider
Targus CityGear TCG660GL for the same size without the conversion, TCG655GL for a 12–14″ machine, or a DICOTA Backpack Eco CORE if you want recycled fabric, a lockable zip and RFID protection instead.
