Transcend JetFlash 790 — 256 GB USB 3.1 Gen 1 Capless Flash Drive

256 GB capacityCapless slide-out connector9 g, keyring loopFive-year limited warranty

The Transcend JetFlash 790 (TS256GJF790K) is a 256 GB USB Type-A flash drive with a slide-out connector instead of a cap, so there is nothing to lose in a bag. It weighs 9 g, measures 63.6 mm long and has a keyring loop at the back. Transcend bundles its Elite utility for backup, restore and folder encryption on Windows, macOS and Android. It is a straightforward everyday drive rather than a performance one — and that distinction matters here, for the reason set out immediately below.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Transcend publishes no speed figure for the JetFlash 790, at any capacity. The performance section of the current datasheet is empty apart from the standard disclaimer, so we do not print a number. The “90 MB/s” and “100 MB/s” figures that circulate for this drive come from resellers and older marketing, not from Transcend. If you are buying it to move large files and need a guaranteed transfer rate, the JetFlash 920 is rated by Transcend at up to 420 MB/s read and 400 MB/s write — choose that instead and ask us to price it. Also note the naming: Transcend lists the JetFlash 790 in black and white, and the 790C is a different product with a USB Type-C plug that will not fit a Type-A port. Transcend does not state what is in the box beyond the drive.

Best For

✓ Backups of documents, photos and working folders
✓ Carrying files between machines
✓ Loading media onto a TV, car stereo or console
✓ Users who keep losing drive caps
✓ A keyring drive with plenty of space
✓ Windows, macOS and Android with USB OTG

Key Features

Capless, so nothing goes missing
The connector slides out of the body and retracts back in. There is no cap to lose and no hinge to snap, which is the usual way a flash drive dies in a bag or a pocket.

256 GB in 9 grams
63.6 x 21.2 x 10.6 mm and 9 g, with a keyring loop moulded into the back of the shell. It carries a serious amount of storage without a cable or a case.

Transcend Elite included
Transcend’s free Elite utility handles scheduled backup, restore, folder encryption and cloud backup on Windows, macOS and Android. It is a download rather than a disc, and it is optional — the drive works as plain storage without it.

Five-year warranty from Transcend
Transcend publishes a five-year limited warranty on the JetFlash 790, which is longer than most drives at this price and applies globally rather than only in one region.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is it?
Transcend does not say, and neither will we. The current datasheet for the JetFlash 790 has an empty performance section at every capacity, so there is no manufacturer figure to quote. In practice a USB 3.1 Gen 1 drive of this class is far quicker than a USB 2.0 stick for documents and photos, but if you need a committed transfer rate for video work, buy the JetFlash 920, which Transcend rates at up to 420 MB/s read and 400 MB/s write.
Is the 790C the same drive in a different colour?
No. The JetFlash 790C is a separate product with a USB Type-C plug. It will not go into a standard USB-A port, and this drive will not go into a USB-C-only laptop or phone. The C is the connector, not the colour.
Do I have to install the Transcend software?
No. The drive works as plain storage the moment you plug it in. Transcend Elite is a free optional download if you want scheduled backups or folder encryption — and if you want encryption that does not depend on software, ask us about the Kingston IronKey range instead.
Singular Expert Insight
We would rather tell you what the JetFlash 790 is than pad the page with numbers Transcend has not published. It is 256 GB, capless, 9 g, five-year warranty, and the connector mechanism is the reason people buy it a second time — caps are how flash drives die. What it is not is a fast drive with a promise attached. Transcend leaves the speed section of this datasheet blank, and we are not going to fill it in from a reseller listing. If speed is the point of the purchase, the JetFlash 920 carries a real published figure and the JetFlash 930C adds a Type-C plug on the same body. If capacity, price and not losing the cap are the point, this is the right drive and there is nothing else you need to know about it.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want 256 GB in a capless 9 g keyring drive with a five-year warranty, for documents, photos and media rather than timed transfers.

Skip it if

You need a guaranteed transfer speed — Transcend publishes none for this series, and we will not quote one. Also skip it if your laptop or phone is USB-C only.

Also consider

JetFlash 920 for a published 420 MB/s read, or JetFlash 930C for the same speed with both USB-A and USB-C plugs on one body.
