The TRENDnet TE100-MGBFX is a Fast Ethernet SFP module: 100BASE-FX at 1310 nm over multimode fibre with an LC duplex connector, reaching up to 2 km. It is the module for SFP slots that run at 100 Mbps — typically industrial switches, media converters and older fibre links built for Fast Ethernet — where a Gigabit optic cannot run. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a 100 Mbps module, not Gigabit: it will not link with a 1000BASE-SX module such as the look-alike TEG-MGBSX, and many Gigabit-only SFP ports will not run it at all. Check that your port supports 100BASE-FX. It uses 1310 nm on multimode fibre, so the far end must be another 100BASE-FX module. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
