TRENDnet TPE-P521ES — 5-Port Gigabit Switch Powered by PoE+, with PoE Pass-Through
Powered by PoE+ — no adapter2× PoE out · 18 W budget5× Gigabit RJ45EdgeSmart web management
The TRENDnet TPE-P521ES is a 5-port Gigabit EdgeSmart switch that takes its own power from an upstream PoE+ switch or injector and passes part of that power on to two PoE devices — built for installers who need extra network ports at a ceiling, pole, meeting room or classroom where there is no mains socket.
One Gigabit port is the powered PoE input (PD). Two Gigabit ports act as PoE outputs and the remaining two are standard Gigabit data ports. Fed by an IEEE 802.3at (PoE+) source, the switch has an 18 W budget for its PoE outputs; fed by an 802.3af source, the budget drops to 8 W. The compact, fanless metal housing also carries TRENDnet's EdgeSmart feature set: browser management, VLANs, IGMP snooping and QoS.
Before you order: The switch has no power socket and no adapter — it runs only from an upstream 802.3at (PoE+) or 802.3af PoE source on its PD input port. With 802.3af input only 8 W is left for the two PoE outputs.
What's in the Box
- TRENDnet TPE-P521ES switch
- Quick Installation Guide
- No power adapter — by design, the switch is powered through its PoE input port
- No Ethernet cables
What It Means in Practice
- Run a single Cat5e/Cat6 cable from a PoE+ switch in the comms room and you get four extra Gigabit ports at the far end, two of which can power a small device.
- The 18 W shared between both PoE outputs suits light loads — for example an IP phone plus a small fixed IP camera, or one typical indoor access point — not two power-hungry PoE+ devices.
- The PoE input cable is also the uplink to your network, so traffic from the other four ports shares that single Gigabit link back to the main switch.
- EdgeSmart management lets you put cameras or phones on their own VLAN, prioritise voice and video with QoS and keep multicast traffic under control with IGMP snooping, all from a web browser.
- Metal and fanless, so it runs silently and can be wall-mounted in a ceiling void, a small cabinet or behind a display.
What Will Not Work
- It will not start from an ordinary non-PoE switch port — without a PoE source on the input port it stays off.
- It cannot power two PoE+ (30 W) devices: the total output budget is 18 W (8 W with 802.3af input).
- No IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++) support on input or output.
- No SFP slot and no 2.5G/10G ports — all five ports are 10/100/1000 RJ45.
- It is a Layer 2 switch, not a router: no NAT, DHCP server or routing between networks.
Key Features
PoE pass-through
Powered by PoE+ on the input port and passes power on to two PoE ports — no mains socket needed where you install it.
EdgeSmart management
Web interface with VLAN, IGMP snooping and QoS for small business, hospitality and education networks.
Fanless metal housing
Silent passive cooling in a compact metal case for desktop or wall mounting.
Full Gigabit
10 Gbps switching capacity and 7.44 Mpps forwarding — every port runs at Gigabit speed, non-blocking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a power adapter?
No. The TPE-P521ES has no DC input; it is powered from an upstream PoE+ (802.3at) or PoE (802.3af) switch or injector connected to its PoE input port.
What can I power from the two PoE ports?
Both outputs share 18 W when the switch is fed by PoE+ (8 W with 802.3af). That covers, for example, an IP phone and a small IP camera, or one typical indoor access point — check the PoE class or maximum wattage of your devices.
How far can I place it from the main switch?
Normal Ethernet distances apply: up to 100 m of Cat5e or better between the PoE source and the switch, and up to 100 m from the switch to each device.
Is it a fully managed switch?
It is an EdgeSmart (web-smart) Layer 2 switch with a browser interface for VLAN, QoS and IGMP snooping — not a Layer 3 managed switch with routing or CLI.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The TPE-P521ES solves one specific problem well: a single PoE+ cable reaches a location and you need several devices there. Size the power budget honestly — 18 W in total is right for light loads, not for two PoE+ access points or PTZ cameras. When a mains socket is available and you need more PoE power, a desktop PoE+ switch is the better tool; compare options in our
network switches.
✓ Buy it if one PoE+ cable reaches a spot without power and you need 2–4 extra Gigabit ports, with one or two small PoE devices.
✕ Skip it if your upstream port is not PoE, or the devices at the far end need more than 18 W together.
→ Also consider a mains-powered 5-port Gigabit PoE+ desktop switch such as the TP-Link TL-SG1005LP (40 W budget) when a socket is available.
Not sure your upstream switch delivers 802.3at? Send us its model and the devices you want to power and we will check the PoE budget before you order.
