The Ubiquiti UACC-OM-SM-10G-S-2 is a matched pair of 10 Gbit bidirectional SFP+ modules that carry a full link over a single strand of single-mode fibre, up to 10 km. One module transmits at 1270 nm and receives at 1330 nm, the other the reverse, so the pair is ready to install at both ends. It also runs at 1 Gbps. In practice, bidirectional optics are used where fibre is scarce — a leased dark-fibre strand, a full duct or an old building link. Before you order, confirm which end of the strand gets which module and that the fibre is single-mode all the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Install one module of each type at the two ends of the strand — two of the same wavelength will not link. The connector is simplex LC, so you need a single-fibre patch cord, not a duplex pair. It will not link to duplex LR optics. For a 1 Gbit pair, Ubiquiti’s UACC-OM-SM-1G-S-2 is the lower-speed version. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? One strand instead of two
A bidirectional optic sends and receives on different wavelengths over a single single-mode strand, which halves the fibre you need. The price of that is pairing: each link needs one downstream and one upstream module.
Hot-swappable
Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
Plan both ends together
A link only comes up when both ends use the same standard, speed and media. Order the far-end optic, the patch cord and any spares in one go and the link works on day one.
