UniFi 5G Max Outdoor — weatherproof 5G uplink for a UniFi network

5G NR up to 3.4 Gbps2 × 9 dBi directionalIPX6 weatherproof-40 to 65 °C

The Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Max Outdoor is a cellular modem — Ubiquiti’s own word for it — that gives a UniFi console or Cloud Gateway a 5G internet connection instead of, or alongside, a fixed line. It mounts outdoors on a pole or a wall, connects back to the network over a single 2.5 GbE cable that also carries its power, and is adopted in the UniFi interface like any other UniFi device. Six embedded antennas include two high-gain directional elements aimed at the downlink, which is the part that makes it useful where an indoor modem simply cannot hold a signal. It is not a Wi-Fi access point and it does not serve clients of its own: it provides the WAN, and your gateway does the rest.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This device needs a UniFi console or Cloud Gateway to sit behind — it is a modem, not a router, and it does not hand out addresses or run a network on its own. It has one 2.5 GbE port that is both the network link and the power input, so it needs a PoE source: a UniFi PoE switch port or a suitable injector. Ubiquiti does not publish the exact 802.3 PoE class for this model, so if you are powering it from a non-UniFi switch, tell us your switch model and we will check it with you first. You also need a working SIM and 5G coverage at the mounting point — neither is included. Pole and wall mounting kits are supplied; the housing is IPX6 as shipped and reaches IP67 only with the optional cable-gland door kit, which is a separate accessory.

Best For

✓ Rural and remote sites with no usable fixed-line service
✓ Roof or mast installs aimed at a distant cell tower
✓ Failover WAN for a UniFi gateway at a business site
✓ Temporary sites, construction offices and events
✓ Locations where an indoor modem cannot hold a stable signal
✓ Existing UniFi networks that want the WAN managed in the same interface

Key Features

Directional antennas where they matter
Six embedded cellular antennas, two of which are high-gain directional elements rated at a peak 9 dBi with an 85° by 85° beamwidth, pointed at the downlink. That is the practical difference from the indoor model: you can aim this one at a tower and recover a link that would otherwise be unusable.

Built for outdoors, not just splash-proof
IPX6 as supplied, and IP67 with the optional cable-gland door kit. The operating range is -40 °C to 65 °C, against 0 °C to 40 °C on the indoor version — this one is designed to live on a mast through a full year of weather.

One cable does everything
A single 2.5 GbE run carries both the data and the PoE power, so there is no separate supply to weatherproof at the top of a pole. Maximum power consumption is 14.5 W, which keeps it within the budget of a modest PoE switch.

Adopts into UniFi like any other device
It appears in the UniFi interface alongside your switches and access points, so signal level, band, and WAN status are visible in the same place as the rest of the network rather than in a separate vendor portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the UniFi 5G Max Outdoor replace my router?
No. Ubiquiti calls it a modem, and that is exactly what it is — it turns a 5G signal into an Ethernet WAN and hands it to a UniFi console or Cloud Gateway, which does the routing, firewalling and Wi-Fi. On its own it will not run a network. If you have no UniFi gateway yet, you need one alongside this.
Is it faster than the indoor UniFi 5G Max?
No — both are rated at the same peak 3.4 Gbps 5G NSA downlink. The difference is where they can be installed and how well they hold a weak signal. The Outdoor model adds a weatherproof housing, a -40 °C to 65 °C range, and two 9 dBi directional antennas you can aim at a tower. Choose it for the install environment and the signal, not for a speed advantage.
What do I need to power it?
A PoE source on the far end of the single 2.5 GbE run — typically a UniFi PoE switch port. Maximum draw is 14.5 W. Ubiquiti does not state the 802.3 PoE class on its specification page, so if you plan to power it from a third-party switch or injector, send us the model and we will check it before you order.
Is it fully waterproof out of the box?
It is IPX6 as supplied, which covers powerful jets of water from any direction. IP67, which adds immersion, is only reached with the optional cable-gland door kit — that is a separate accessory and is not in the box. For a normal pole or wall installation with the cable entry dressed properly, IPX6 is the rating you are working with.
Singular Expert Insight
The honest comparison here is with the indoor UniFi 5G Max, because the throughput numbers are identical and it is easy to assume the outdoor unit is the faster one. It is not. What it buys you is the ability to put the modem where the signal is — on a roof, on a mast, aimed at a tower — and to leave it there through winter. If your indoor unit already shows a solid signal at the desk, the outdoor model changes nothing except the price. If it drops to one bar behind a concrete wall, the directional antennas are the whole point. Remember it still needs a gateway behind it; our routers section covers what can sit on the LAN side, and network switches covers the PoE port that powers it. Tell us your site and carrier and we will sanity-check the band list with you.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your site has poor or no fixed-line service, you already run UniFi, and the modem has to live outside. The 9 dBi directional antennas and the -40 to 65 °C range are what you are paying for, along with a single 2.5 GbE cable that carries data and power together.

Skip it if

Your signal is already fine indoors — the indoor UniFi 5G Max hits the same 3.4 Gbps and costs less. Skip it too if you have no UniFi console or Cloud Gateway, because this device cannot route on its own, and if you were expecting a SIM or a PoE injector in the box.

Also consider

The indoor UniFi 5G Max for desk, wall or window placement. A UniFi Cloud Gateway if you still need the routing side, and a PoE switch port to feed the single Ethernet run.
