WD Elements SE 2TB Portable Hard Drive
2TBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Portable 2.5-inchBus-poweredNo encryption
The WD Elements SE 2TB (part number WDBEPK0020BBK) is a portable 2.5-inch external hard drive connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s. Elements SE is the stripped-back line: no encryption, no backup suite, just capacity and a cable. It ships with WD Discovery device management software, which is what separates it from the plain Elements Portable.
Before you buy: this model has no hardware encryption and no password protection. If the drive will ever carry anything sensitive, buy a My Passport instead, which includes both. Note also that the manufacturer warranty here is two years rather than the three years on My Passport and P10, and that Western Digital publishes conflicting height and weight figures for this model on its own retail and recertified pages, which we have reproduced rather than picking one. The drive connects with the supplied USB Type-A to Micro-B cable; if your computer only has USB-C ports you will need an adapter or a USB-C to Micro-B cable, which is not included. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power and there is no mains adapter to find a socket for.
Best For
✓ Straightforward extra storage
Plug it in and it works, with nothing to install or configure.
✓ Carrying files between machines
Bus-powered and compact, so it travels with a single cable.
✓ Cheap secondary copies
The lowest-cost way to keep an offline duplicate of files that matter.
✓ Media libraries
Room for video and photo archives at a fraction of the cost per terabyte of flash.
Key Features
2TB bus-powered
Runs entirely from the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to pack.
WD Discovery included
Device management software covering sleep timer, LED control and formatting. The plain Elements Portable ships with no software at all.
No encryption
Western Digital does not offer hardware encryption or password protection on this line. It keeps the price down and is the main reason to choose My Passport instead if security matters.
USB 3.2 Gen 1
A 5 Gb/s link, backward compatible with USB 2.0 at lower speed.
Formatted NTFS for Windows
Ready for Windows 10 or later out of the box; macOS needs reformatting.
2-year manufacturer warranty
Shorter than the 3-year term Western Digital gives My Passport and the P10 game drives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WDBEPK0020BBK have password protection?
No. Western Digital does not offer hardware encryption or password protection on the Elements SE line. If you need the contents protected when the drive is lost, choose a My Passport, which includes 256-bit AES hardware encryption.
Does it work with a Mac?
It arrives formatted NTFS for Windows. macOS will read it, but writing requires reformatting to exFAT or APFS, which erases the contents.
What is the difference between Elements SE and Elements Portable?
Elements SE adds WD Discovery device management software; the plain Elements Portable ships with none. Neither has encryption or backup software. That is the only published difference.
What do I need to know before buying the WDBEPK0020BBK?
It arrives formatted and ready to use but you may want to reformat it for your operating system, which erases the contents. It is bus-powered from the USB cable. A single external drive is not a backup strategy on its own; keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable.
Singular Expert Insight
Elements SE is the drive to buy when you want capacity and nothing else, and at 2TB it is about as cheap as portable storage gets. The trade-off is real though: a lost Elements SE is readable by whoever finds it, whereas a lost My Passport with password protection enabled is not, and the warranty is a year shorter. If the drive stays on a desk with holiday photos on it, fine. If it travels with anything sensitive, spend the extra. Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You want the cheapest portable capacity per euro and you do not need encryption or backup software.
Skip if
The drive will carry anything sensitive, or you want a 3-year manufacturer warranty. My Passport covers both.
Also consider
WD My Passport for encryption and backup software, WD Elements Portable if you do not need the device management software, or an external SSD for speed.
