WD Elements SE 4TB External Hard Drive
4TBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Portable 2.5-inchBus-poweredBus-powered
The WD Elements SE 4TB (part number WDBJRT0040BBK) is a portable 2.5-inch external hard drive connecting over USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s. It is the no-frills option in the Western Digital portable range: bus-powered, plug and play, with device management software included and no encryption. The appeal is capacity per euro rather than features.
Before you buy: this model does not include hardware encryption or password protection. If you need the drive to be unreadable when lost, buy a My Passport instead, which lists both. It is a mechanical 2.5-inch drive rather than an SSD, so treat it gently and do not move it while it is writing. It ships formatted for Windows, and Western Digital does not publish which file system. The drive connects with the supplied USB Type-A to Micro-B cable; if your computer only has USB-C ports you will need an adapter or a USB-C to Micro-B cable, which is not included. It is bus-powered, so the single USB cable carries both data and power and there is no mains adapter to find a socket for.
Best For
✓ Straightforward extra storage
Plug it in and it works, with nothing to install or configure.
✓ Carrying files between machines
Bus-powered and compact, so it travels with a single cable.
✓ Cheap secondary copies
The lowest-cost way to keep an offline duplicate of files that matter.
✓ Media libraries
Plenty of room for video and photo archives at a fraction of the cost per terabyte of flash.
Key Features
4TB bus-powered
Runs entirely from the USB cable, so there is no mains adapter to pack.
USB 3.2 Gen 1 at up to 5 Gb/s
Backward compatible with USB 2.0, so it works with older machines at lower speed. Note that USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 3.0 are the same specification under Western Digital naming.
Plug and play
No software to install and nothing to configure, which is the whole point of the Elements line.
Device management software included
The Elements SE adds Western Digital device management software, which the plain Elements Portable does not include.
No encryption
Western Digital does not list hardware encryption or password protection for this range. This is the clearest difference from My Passport.
Compact 2.5-inch enclosure
About 110 by 82 by 23 mm and 0.23 kg, which fits a jacket pocket or a laptop sleeve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the WDBJRT0040BBK have password protection or encryption?
No. Western Digital does not list hardware encryption or password protection for the Elements range. If you need the contents protected when the drive is lost, choose a My Passport instead, which includes both.
Does the WDBJRT0040BBK work with a Mac?
It arrives formatted for Windows. macOS will read it, but writing usually requires reformatting to exFAT or APFS, which erases the contents. Western Digital does not publish which file system it ships with.
What is the difference between WD Elements and WD My Passport?
Elements is the stripped-back line: no bundled backup software, no encryption, no password protection, lower price. My Passport adds hardware encryption, password protection and Acronis True Image backup software. The drive mechanisms are comparable.
What do I need to know before buying the WDBJRT0040BBK?
It arrives formatted for immediate use but you may want to reformat it for your operating system, which erases the contents. It is bus-powered from the USB cable. A single external drive is not a backup strategy on its own; keep a second copy of anything irreplaceable.
Singular Expert Insight
Elements is the drive to buy when you want capacity and nothing else. There is no encryption and no software, so the price is lower and there is nothing to go wrong. The trade-off is real, though: a lost Elements drive is readable by whoever finds it, whereas a lost My Passport with password protection enabled is not. If the drive will ever leave a desk with anything sensitive on it, spend the extra on a My Passport. The SE variant adds device management software over the plain Elements Portable, and nothing else that Western Digital publishes. Buyer's Guide
Buy this if
You want the cheapest portable capacity per euro and you do not need encryption or bundled software.
Skip if
The drive will carry anything sensitive, or you want backup software included. My Passport covers both for a small premium.
Also consider
WD My Passport for encryption and backup software, WD My Book for larger desk-bound capacity, or an external SSD for speed and durability.
