WD Red Pro 20TB NAS Hard Drive, 3.5" SATA 6Gb/s, 7200 RPM, 512MB Cache, CMR, 550 TB/yr Workload
WD Red Pro 20TB NAS Hard Drive — 3.5" SATA, 7200 RPM, CMR
The WD Red Pro 20TB (WD202KFGX) is a 3.5-inch SATA 6Gb/s hard drive built for NAS and RAID systems running 24/7 in small and medium businesses — 7200 RPM, 512MB cache, CMR recording and a 550 TB/year workload rating.
Unlike desktop drives, Red Pro is rated for multi-bay enclosures with vibration from neighbouring disks; Western Digital no longer limits it to a set number of bays. Conventional magnetic recording (CMR) keeps write performance and RAID rebuilds predictable, which is what you want when a 20TB array has to resilver after a failure.
What's in the Box
- 1 × WD Red Pro 20TB 3.5-inch SATA hard drive (bare drive)
- No screws, SATA cable or mounting kit — NAS trays normally include their own
What It Means in Practice
- Sequential transfer up to 285 MB/s — enough to saturate a 2.5GbE NAS link with two or more drives in RAID
- 550 TB/year workload and 2.5 million hours MTBF for always-on file servers, backup targets and video archives
- 20 TB per bay: four drives in RAID 5 give about 60 TB usable (before file-system overhead)
- Power: 6.1 W read/write, 3.6 W idle, 0.9 W standby — 12 V peak 1.8 A at spin-up
- Noise 20 dBA idle / 32 dBA seek — audible in a quiet office, normal for 7200 RPM
What Will Not Work
- Not an SSD — random access and boot speed are far below any SSD
- Not a surveillance drive tuned for many continuous camera streams — for NVRs choose WD Purple
- Will not fit 2.5-inch bays and has no USB — external use needs an enclosure or dock
- Mixing it with SMR drives in the same RAID array slows rebuilds to the speed of the slowest disk
