Frequently Asked Questions

Is the encryption hardware or software based?
It is 256-bit AES hardware encryption built into the drive. You set a password with WD Security to lock and unlock it, with no performance penalty.
Does it need a power adapter?
No. The My Passport is bus-powered over the USB cable, so there is no separate adapter to carry — ideal for backups on the move.
Does it work with a Mac?
It ships ready for Windows. For full read and write on macOS or for Time Machine, reformat it to exFAT or APFS. WD software is available for both platforms.
What is the difference between My Passport and WD Elements?
The My Passport adds 256-bit AES hardware encryption, password protection and WD backup software, while WD Elements is a simpler drive without those extras.
Singular Expert Insight
The My Passport is WD's go-to secure portable drive: the built-in hardware encryption and password protection set it apart from plain portable drives like WD Elements, and the colourful designs are a nice touch. As a mechanical HDD it favours capacity and price over speed — if you want fast editing on the move, a portable SSD is the upgrade. But for secure, high-capacity backups in your bag, this portable hard drive is a dependable choice.

Buyer's Guide

Buy it if
You want secure, password-protected 4TB portable backup with built-in hardware encryption and WD software, in a slim colourful design.
Skip it if
You need SSD speed, rugged drop and water protection, or just the cheapest storage — WD Elements is cheaper without encryption.
Also consider
WD Elements for cheaper storage without encryption, a portable SSD for speed, or a rugged drive if it will take knocks.
