WD Ultrastar DC SN655 7.68TB — U.3 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for Read-Intensive Servers
7.68 TBU.3, PCIe 4.0 x46,800 MB/s read1 DWPD · ISE
The Western Digital Ultrastar DC SN655 7.68TB (part number 0TS2462) is a 2.5-inch, 15 mm U.3 enterprise NVMe SSD with a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface, built for read-intensive server workloads such as databases, virtualisation, analytics and content delivery. At this capacity WD specifies 6,800 MB/s sequential read, 2,000 MB/s sequential write and up to 980K random read IOPS.
It is rated for 1 drive write per day over 5 years and uses ISE (Instant Secure Erase) for fast cryptographic erase. The SN655 flash line is now marketed under the Sandisk brand; the official datasheet for this part is WD-branded.
Before you order: U.3 drives work in U.3 tri-mode backplanes and, per WD, in U.2 NVMe backplanes. The bay must be wired for NVMe (PCIe) — SAS/SATA-only bays and SAS/SATA RAID controllers cannot use it.
What's in the Box
- 1 × WD Ultrastar DC SN655 7.68TB U.3 SSD (bare drive)
- WD does not publish retail package contents
What It Means in Practice
- Very high read performance for VM hosts, databases and caching tiers on PCIe 4.0 servers.
- 1 DWPD suits read-heavy workloads; for write-heavy logging or caching consider a mixed-use (3 DWPD) model.
- Selectable 16 W or 20 W power modes (20 W default) to fit server power budgets.
- ISE allows quick, secure crypto-erase before redeploying or retiring the drive.
What Will Not Work
- It will not work in SATA/SAS-only bays or behind SAS/SATA RAID controllers.
- It does not fit M.2 slots or 7 mm drive bays — it is a 15 mm 2.5-inch drive.
- ISE is not a TCG self-encrypting drive — for TCG-Ruby SED choose 0TS2468.
- On PCIe 3.0 hosts it runs at PCIe 3.0 speed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work in my U.2 server bay?
WD states the SN655 U.3 is compatible with U.2 NVMe backplanes. The bay must be NVMe-wired, not SAS/SATA only.
Is this a self-encrypting drive?
No. 0TS2462 uses ISE (crypto-erase). For TCG-Ruby SED choose 0TS2468.
Is 1 DWPD enough?
For read-intensive workloads, yes. For heavy write workloads choose a higher-endurance model.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The SN655 7.68TB delivers excellent read performance per bay for PCIe 4.0 servers. Check that your backplane is NVMe-capable (U.3 tri-mode or U.2) before ordering, and compare options in our
enterprise SSDs.
✓ Buy it if you have NVMe U.2/U.3 bays and a read-intensive workload that needs high capacity per drive.
✕ Skip it if your server has only SAS/SATA bays, or you need a TCG self-encrypting or high-endurance drive.
→ Also consider 0TS2468 (TCG-Ruby SED) or 0TS2459 (SE) in the same capacity.
Not sure it fits your setup? Send us the model of your rack, switch or device and we will check compatibility before you order.
