The WEDO Safety Cutter ALU Basic (article number 78 808) is an aluminium-bodied safety knife with a spring-loaded SK5 trapezoid blade that retracts into the housing automatically once the cut is finished, plus a magazine in the handle holding two spare blades. It is the model to buy when a plastic cutter feels too light for the job but you do not need the depth wheel of the PROFI or the switchable mechanism of the PROFI PLUS. Push the thumb slider to extend the blade, cut, and let go — the edge disappears back into the metal body. It measures 151 x 44 x 26 mm and weighs 96 g.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This model uses trapezoid blades, not snap-off blades — the 18 mm and 9 mm segmented blades from the COMFORTLINE, AUTO-LOAD and 2-in-1 cutters do not fit. Replacements are WEDO 78 81 or 78 82 trapezoid blades, 61 x 19 mm SK5, ten per box. There is no cutting-depth adjustment on the ALU Basic; if you need to set 9, 15 or 25 mm of blade, the 78 845 PROFI is the model with the depth wheel. The tool suits both right and left-handed users.

A one-piece aluminium body gives the ALU Basic the rigidity of a metal tool without the 200 g-plus weight of the PREMIUM or PROFI PLUS. It shrugs off the drops and knocks that crack plastic cutters in a busy stockroom.
Blade returns by itself
The SK5 trapezoid blade is spring-loaded: extend it with the thumb slider to cut, and it retracts into the housing once the cut is over. No exposed edge is left on the bench, in a pocket or in an apron.
Two spare blades in the handle
An integrated magazine carries two extra blades inside the tool. A blunt edge gets replaced in seconds rather than at the end of the shift, which is the single biggest factor in safe cutting.
Right and left-handed
WEDO states the ALU Basic is suitable for right and left-handed users, so a shared tool on a packing bench does not have to be duplicated.
