The WEDO Safety Cutter STANDARD (article number 78 805) is a lightweight safety knife whose spring-loaded SK5 trapezoid blade withdraws into the body by itself the moment the cut ends — and, unlike most cutters in this class, it retracts even if the slider is still being held down. A second protected blade at the rear opens shrink film, cords and strapping without exposing an edge at all, and a safety lock blocks the slider when the tool is not in use. At 158 x 36 x 21 mm and about 58 g it is the lightest and most affordable safety cutter WEDO makes.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Two points worth knowing before you buy. First, the housing is ABS plastic, not metal or aluminium — that is what keeps it at 58 g and keeps the price down; for a metal or aluminium body look at the 78 808 ALU Basic, 78 815 PREMIUM or 78 837 PLUS. Second, WEDO does not state how many blades are supplied with this model and there is no blade magazine in the handle, so order a pack of trapezoid spares alongside it: WEDO 78 81 or 78 82, both 61 x 19 mm SK5, ten per box. The blade can be re-mounted for left-handed use.

Key Features
Retracts even with the slider held
Most spring-loaded cutters only return when you release the slider. WEDO states explicitly that this blade withdraws after the cut even if the slider is not let go — the safety behaviour does not depend on the user remembering to release it.
Integrated foil and strap cutter
A protected blade at the rear of the body slices shrink film, cord and strapping without any exposed edge. It is the feature that separates the STANDARD from the 78 808, 78 815 and 78 820, none of which have one.
Safety lock and tool-free blade change
A safety catch blocks the blade from being advanced while the cutter is stored or carried. To change the blade you push the slider forward and fold it back — no screwdriver, no disassembly.
Light, reversible and hangable
At approximately 58 g in an ABS body with a rubberised grip zone, this is the cutter people actually keep in a pocket or apron. The blade re-mounts for left-handers and the body has a hanging hole for a tool board.
