Wera 3950/9 Hex-Plus Multicolour HF Stainless 1 — 9 L-Keys

9 Keys: 1.5–10 mmStainless SteelBall End Long ArmHolding Function from 3 mm

The 3950/9 is a nine-key metric L-key set in vacuum ice-hardened stainless steel — chosen so the tool cannot leave contact rust behind on stainless fasteners, which is the usual reason a stainless assembly starts staining. Sizes run 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm, all with a Hex-Plus profile that spreads load away from the corners of the socket, and all with a ball end on the long arm so the key can be swung off-axis where access is poor. From 3 mm upward a sprung detent in the ball head grips the screw so it stays on the tool. Each key carries a colour-coded grip sleeve for size. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The holding function is only on the 3 mm key and above — the 1.5, 2 and 2.5 mm keys do not have it, despite HF appearing in the set name. It works on the ball end of the long arm only. These are not insulated and not VDE-approved, and not impact-rated. Wera publishes no torque figures; stainless is softer than chrome-vanadium and the ball end is the weakest point on any L-key, so heavy tightening belongs on the short hex arm. Sizes are metric only, with no 7 or 9 mm and nothing outside 1.5–10 mm.

Best For

✓ Stainless steel assemblies and marine fittings
✓ Food, medical and hygiene environments
✓ Overhead and blind-hole fastening
✓ Workshops that keep tools rust-free

Key Features

Holding Function from 3 mm Upward
A sprung detent inside the ball head clamps into the screw socket so the screw hangs on the key. That is what lets you feed a fastener into a blind or overhead hole one-handed instead of dropping it into the machine.

Vacuum Ice-Hardened Stainless Steel
Stainless is normally the softer choice; Wera vacuum ice-hardens it to recover hardness comparable to carbon steel. The point is preventing contact rust when working on stainless fasteners.

Hex-Plus Profile
The profile bears away from the corners of the socket, so contact area is larger and the socket is far less likely to round out — the failure mode that ends most hex keys and most small stainless screws.

Multicolour Size Coding
Each key has a coloured thermoplastic grip sleeve keyed to its size under the Wera Take it easy tool finder scheme, so the right one is picked by eye rather than by trial. Multicolour is the colour coding, not a coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all nine keys hold the screw?
No. The holding function is present from 3 mm upward — six of the nine. The 1.5, 2 and 2.5 mm keys do not have it, because there is not enough room in the ball head at those sizes.
What does Multicolour mean?
It is Wera colour coding by size: each key has a coloured grip sleeve so you can pick the right one at a glance. It is not a coating and it says nothing about the steel.
Why stainless steel?
So the tool does not deposit iron particles on stainless fasteners, which is what causes contact rust and staining on an otherwise stainless assembly. It also matters in food, medical and marine environments.
Can I use the ball end for final tightening?
Better not to. The ball end exists to let you work off-axis in awkward access; the contact area is smaller than the plain hex end. Use the short arm for the tightening torque.
Singular Expert Insight
Stainless L-keys are bought for one reason that has nothing to do with the tool wearing out: a chrome-vanadium key rubs iron into a stainless socket, and a few weeks later the customer is looking at rust streaks on a marine fitting or a food-industry panel. Beyond that, the holding function is the feature you will actually notice day to day — a screw that stays on the key is a screw not dropped into a machine. Just remember it starts at 3 mm, so the three smallest keys behave like ordinary ones. Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You work on stainless hardware and want L-keys that will not cause contact rust, with a ball end and a holding function on the sizes that matter.

Skip it if

You need imperial sizes, 7 or 9 mm, maximum torque capability, or a cheaper carbon-steel set for general work.

Also consider

A Wera Hex-Plus bit set if you would rather drive hex screws with a bit driver, or a chrome-vanadium 950 series L-key set where contact rust is not a concern.
