LANCOM SFP-LR40-LC10 – 10G SFP+ Extended-Reach Transceiver for 40 km Single-Mode Links
10GBASE-ER1550 nm · SMFUp to 40 kmLC connector
The LANCOM SFP-LR40-LC10 (article 60182) is a 10 Gigabit SFP+ transceiver for 10GBASE-ER links of up to 40 km over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre, built for the SFP+ ports of LANCOM switches and selected LANCOM gateways. It is the module you choose when two buildings, a campus edge or a metro fibre run are too far apart for a standard 10 km LR optic.
It uses a 1550 nm EML laser with a published transmit power of −1 dBm typical (+3 dBm max) and a receive sensitivity of −15 dBm, so it is designed for long, lossy runs rather than short patch connections. That matters in practice: on short links you must plan attenuation, otherwise the receiver can be overdriven or damaged.
Before you order: This is a long-reach 40 km optic. LANCOM states that at least one 3 dB attenuator should be planned on each RX and TX fibre for short or low-loss links — without it the receiver diode can be destroyed. Both ends of the link need a matching 10GBASE-ER 1550 nm module.
What's in the Box
- 1 × LANCOM SFP-LR40-LC10 SFP+ transceiver module (single unit, article 60182)
- Dust cap fitted on the optical port
- No fibre patch cords and no attenuators are included — order them separately
What It Means in Practice
- Connects two LANCOM SFP+ ports up to 40 km apart over single-mode fibre — typical for inter-building, campus backbone or leased dark-fibre links.
- Runs at 10 Gbit/s full duplex; it does not step down to 1 Gbit/s, so the far end must also be a 10G SFP+ ER optic.
- Hot-swappable: it can be inserted or removed while the switch is running.
- Digital diagnostics (DDM: temperature, optical power) are available on the current-generation modules with the R&S LANCOM logo — useful for spotting a degrading fibre before the link drops.
What Will Not Work
- Will not work over multimode (OM1–OM5) fibre — single-mode 9/125 µm only.
- Will not link to a 10GBASE-LR (1310 nm, 10 km) or 10GBASE-SR module on the other end — use the same ER optic at both ends.
- Not intended for short runs without attenuation — on a few metres of fibre the receiver can be overloaded.
- Not supported in LANCOM 1900/1800 series routers, WLC-60 or the Unified Firewalls UF-360/560/760 according to LANCOM's compatibility table.
- DDM is not available when the module is used in LANCOM Unified Firewalls.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an attenuator?
On long, lossy runs no. On short or low-loss runs LANCOM recommends at least one 3 dB attenuator per RX and TX fibre to protect the receiver. If you are not sure about your fibre loss, send us the link length and number of splices and we will advise.
Can I use it with a 10 km LR module on the other side?
No. An ER (1550 nm) optic must talk to another ER optic. Mixing ER and LR on one link does not work.
Is this the single module or the 10-pack?
Article 60182 is a single module. LANCOM sells a separate bulk pack of 10 under a different article number.
Will it work in a non-LANCOM switch?
LANCOM designs and supports it for LANCOM devices only. Other vendors may reject or warn about third-party optics, so we do not recommend it for non-LANCOM hardware.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Extended-reach 1550 nm optics are only worth it when the distance really exceeds 10 km — below that, a 10GBASE-LR module is simpler and needs no attenuation planning. If your LANCOM core sits in one building and the access switch is across town on dark fibre, this is the right module. Pair it with
LANCOM managed switches that have SFP+ uplinks, and order two modules — one for each end.
✓ Buy it if you are linking two LANCOM SFP+ ports more than 10 km and up to 40 km apart over single-mode fibre.
✕ Skip it if your run is under 10 km (choose a 10GBASE-LR module) or your fibre is multimode (choose an SR module).
→ Also consider the LANCOM 10 km LR or 300 m SR SFP+ modules for shorter links; LANCOM 25G SFP28 optics for newer switches.
Not sure about distance or fibre loss? Send us the length of the run, fibre type and the LANCOM model at each end and we will confirm the right module before you order.
