The HPE 845398-B21 is HPE's 25Gb SFP28 short-reach optical transceiver: a 25GBASE-SR module at 850 nm for multimode fibre with an LC connector, used on the server side of 25GbE links from HPE ProLiant and Synergy-class 25Gb adapters.

It reaches up to 100 m over OM4 and up to 70 m over OM3 multimode fibre, which covers links inside a rack, between racks in the same room and across most server rooms. HPE states clearly that this transceiver does not function at 10-Gigabit, so both ends of the link must run at 25G.

Before you order: This module runs at 25 Gb/s only — HPE states it does not function at 10-Gigabit. It will not link to a 10G SFP+ switch port. Check the adapter and switch in HPE's server networking transceiver compatibility matrix, or send us both models and we will check.

What It Means in Practice

  • Install it in a 25Gb SFP28 port on a supported HPE server adapter and connect an LC duplex multimode patch cord to a 25G SR port on the switch.
  • Use OM4 fibre if the run is longer than 70 m; on OM3 stay within 70 m.
  • For very short in-rack connections, a 25G SFP28 DAC cable is often simpler and cheaper than two transceivers and a fibre.
  • The switch end needs its own 25G SR optic approved by the switch vendor (for HPE FlexFabric switches HPE uses a different part number, JL293A).

What Will Not Work

  • It will not run at 10G or link to 10G SFP+ ports.
  • It does not work over single-mode (OS1/OS2) fibre — that needs an LR optic.
  • It does not reach beyond 100 m (OM4) or 70 m (OM3).
  • HPE publishes no statement for use in non-HPE servers or switches; third-party equipment may reject it.
  • It does not fit RJ45 copper ports or QSFP28 ports without an adapter.

Will it work in my Cisco or Dell switch?
HPE does not publish compatibility with other vendors, and many switches only accept their own coded optics. Use the switch vendor's 25G SR module at the switch end.
