AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX — 24-Core Zen 5 Workstation Processor (sTR5, Tray)
24 Cores / 48 ThreadsUp to 5.4 GHz128MB L3sTR5 · 350W
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX is a 24-core, 48-thread Zen 5 workstation processor for the sTR5 socket, with a 4.2 GHz base clock, up to 5.4 GHz boost and 128MB of L3 cache, built for engineers, 3D artists, video editors and developers who need high clock speeds together with workstation-class memory and PCIe bandwidth.
It belongs to the Threadripper PRO 9000 WX-Series. On a WRX90 motherboard it runs eight channels of DDR5 RDIMM at up to 6400 MT/s (up to 2TB) and exposes up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes for multiple GPUs, NVMe arrays and high-speed network cards. This is the tray version (part number 100-000000724): the processor itself, intended for system builders and integrators.
Before you order: This CPU needs an sTR5 motherboard (WRX90 or TRX50 chipset), registered ECC DDR5 RDIMM memory and a separate cooler rated for 350W. Ordinary desktop DDR5 UDIMM memory and AM5 boards will not work. If you already own a WRX90/TRX50 board from the 7000 WX generation, confirm with the board maker that its BIOS supports the 9000 WX-Series before you install it.
What's in the Box
- 1 × AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9965WX processor (tray packaging)
- No cooler — AMD lists the thermal solution as not included
- No retail box, no AMD case badge and no printed documentation (tray part)
What It Means in Practice
- 24 Zen 5 cores at up to 5.4 GHz suit applications that mix lightly-threaded work (CAD modelling, viewport work, compiling single files) with heavily threaded jobs (rendering, simulation, encoding).
- On WRX90 you get the full platform: 8 memory channels, up to 2TB of RAM and 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes — enough for several graphics cards plus NVMe storage at full bandwidth.
- On TRX50 the same CPU runs 4 memory channels (up to 1TB) and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes — a lower-cost board choice if you do not need the full I/O.
- 350W TDP means a workstation-grade cooler (large air cooler or AIO with sTR5 mounting) and a power supply sized for the CPU plus your GPUs.
What Will Not Work
- AM5, AM4, sTRX4, sWRX8 or EPYC (SP3/SP5/SP6) motherboards — the socket is sTR5 only.
- Desktop DDR5 UDIMM memory — WRX90 and TRX50 platforms need DDR5 RDIMM (registered ECC).
- Running without a graphics card — there is no integrated graphics; a discrete GPU is required.
- Running without a cooler — none is included, and a cooler designed for AM5 will not mount on sTR5.
- Older WRX90/TRX50 boards without a BIOS update for the 9000 WX-Series.
Key Features
Zen 5 at up to 5.4 GHz
High single-core boost keeps interactive applications responsive while 24 cores handle rendering and compile jobs.
8-channel DDR5-6400
On WRX90: eight RDIMM channels at up to 6400 MT/s and up to 2TB, with ECC enabled by default.
128 lanes of PCIe 5.0
Room for multiple GPUs, NVMe RAID and 100GbE-class network cards without lane sharing.
AMD PRO technologies
Enterprise security and manageability features for fleet-managed workstations (platform dependent).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between this tray version and the boxed 100-100000724WOF?
The processor is the same. Tray parts ship as the bare CPU for system builders; the boxed version comes in AMD retail packaging. Neither includes a cooler.
Can I use it on a TRX50 board instead of WRX90?
Yes. AMD lists TRX50 as supported, but the board then provides 4 memory channels (up to 1TB) and fewer PCIe lanes than WRX90.
Which memory do I need?
Registered ECC DDR5 (RDIMM). For full bandwidth on WRX90, populate all eight channels with identical modules.
Is 24 cores the right size?
Choose the 9965WX when clock speed and platform I/O matter more than core count. For long multi-threaded renders or simulations, higher-core Threadripper PRO models finish faster.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The 9965WX is the sweet spot for workstations that are used interactively all day: high boost clocks for CAD and content apps, plus the WRX90 platform for multi-GPU and large memory. Budget the full platform — sTR5 board, a matched set of
DDR5 RDIMM memory, a 350W-class sTR5 cooler and a suitable PSU — not just the CPU.
✓ Buy it if you are building or upgrading a WRX90/TRX50 workstation and need high clocks with eight-channel memory and lots of PCIe 5.0 lanes.
✕ Skip it if you have an AM5 desktop or want to reuse desktop UDIMM memory — a Ryzen 9 on AM5 is the simpler, lower-cost route.
→ Also consider Ryzen Threadripper PRO models with more cores on the same sTR5 platform for heavily multi-threaded rendering and simulation.
