Apple HomePod (2nd Generation) Smart Speaker — White
4-inch high-excursion wooferFive horn-loaded tweetersSpatial Audio with Dolby AtmosThread and Matter built in
The Apple HomePod (2nd generation) is a single-cabinet smart speaker built around a 4-inch high-excursion woofer and an array of five horn-loaded tweeters, each with its own neodymium magnet. Room sensing lets it measure the surface it is standing on and adapt the sound to it, Siri is built in, and Thread networking with Matter support turns it into a hub for smart home accessories. A temperature and humidity sensor is included. Part number MDEY4D/A, white, the EU variant.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Setup needs an Apple device. Apple requires an iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later, or an iPhone 8 or later, running the latest iOS; or an iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or later) or iPad mini (5th generation or later) running the latest iPadOS. There is no Android setup path. A stereo pair can only be made with a second HomePod of the same 2nd generation — it will not pair with a HomePod mini or with a 1st generation HomePod. Wi-Fi is 802.11n, so it joins the network but does not use Wi-Fi 6.
Best For
✓ Homes already running iPhone, iPad and Apple Music
✓ Living rooms wanting one-box sound with Dolby Atmos
✓ Apple TV owners adding room-filling audio
✓ Smart homes standardising on Thread and Matter
✓ Anyone who wants Siri without a screen
✓ Rooms where a second unit may be added later for stereo
Key Features
One woofer, five tweeters, one cabinet
A 4-inch high-excursion woofer handles the low end while five horn-loaded tweeters, each with its own neodymium magnet, spread the rest around the room. The result is a speaker that does not need to be aimed at a listening seat to sound right.
Room sensing that adapts to where it stands
An internal low-frequency calibration microphone lets the HomePod work out how the room and the surface it sits on are affecting the sound, and adjust accordingly. Moving it from a shelf to a table is not something you have to compensate for by hand.
Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos
Atmos content from Apple Music or an Apple TV is rendered as Spatial Audio rather than folded down to stereo. Adding a second HomePod of the same generation creates a true stereo pair, and a pair can also serve as the audio system for an Apple TV.
Thread, Matter and a climate sensor
Thread networking is built in and Matter accessories are supported, so the HomePod works as a home hub rather than only a speaker. The built-in temperature and humidity sensor lets automations react to conditions in the room itself.

Singular Expert Insight
The HomePod (2nd generation) is the one Apple speaker that tries to be the whole audio system of a room: a 4-inch woofer and five tweeters in one cabinet, room sensing so it adapts to the shelf it sits on, and Spatial Audio for Atmos material. What makes or breaks it is the household — setup requires an iPhone or iPad, and there is no way around that. Where the household is already on Apple, it doubles as a Thread and Matter home hub with a climate sensor, which no conventional speaker does. Where it is not, a Bluetooth or optical speaker set from our Speakers range will serve better, and Earbuds and True Wireless covers the personal-listening side. Tell us what you already own and we will say whether one HomePod or a stereo pair is the sensible purchase.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
Your household runs on iPhone or iPad, you want one speaker that fills a room rather than a desk, and the Thread and Matter home hub functions plus the temperature and humidity sensor are worth having alongside the sound.
Skip it if
You are on Android, or your only devices are older than an iPhone 8 — there is no setup path for either. Skip it too if you want to stereo pair with a HomePod mini or a 1st generation HomePod, which is not supported.
Also consider
A second HomePod (2nd generation) to make a stereo pair. Edifier S360DB or S2000MKIII if platform-independent sound with optical and Bluetooth inputs suits you better. Apple TV if the HomePod is being bought mainly for television audio.
