Apple Mac Studio with M5 Max — 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB, 512GB
M5 Max36GB · 512GB4× Thunderbolt 510Gb Ethernet
The Apple Mac Studio with M5 Max (MHL64ZD/A) is a compact professional desktop with an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 36GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD, designed for video editing, 3D, audio production, software development and on-device AI work.
This is the standard M5 Max configuration of the 2026 Mac Studio. It combines four Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet and a front SDXC card slot with support for up to five external displays, in a 19.7 cm square chassis that sits on the desk. Like the Mac mini it is headless, so the display, keyboard and mouse are chosen separately.
Before you order: Mac Studio comes with no display, keyboard or mouse. Plan monitors with Thunderbolt/USB-C or HDMI input and your preferred keyboard and mouse.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Apple Mac Studio with M5 Max (MHL64ZD/A)
- 1 × Power cord
- No keyboard, mouse or display included
What It Means in Practice
- 460GB/s memory bandwidth and a 32-core GPU make it well suited to 4K/8K video timelines, 3D rendering and colour grading.
- Hardware decoding for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW and AV1 speeds up professional video workflows.
- Up to five external displays: four at 6K 60Hz or 4K 165Hz over Thunderbolt, plus one over HDMI.
- Front SDXC (UHS-II) slot and USB-C ports make camera card offload and drive connection easy; 10Gb Ethernet suits fast NAS and shared storage.
What Will Not Work
- Windows cannot be installed via Boot Camp on Apple silicon Macs, and external GPUs (eGPU) are not supported.
- Memory (36GB) and SSD (512GB) are fixed at purchase and cannot be upgraded later — heavy 8K or large-model AI users should consider more memory or storage.
- 512GB fills quickly with video media; plan external Thunderbolt storage or a NAS for projects.
- It is a desktop only: no display, keyboard or battery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mac Studio M5 Max or Mac mini M5 Pro?
Choose Mac Studio for heavier GPU work, more memory bandwidth, five displays, USB-A, SDXC and 10Gb Ethernet. Mac mini M5 Pro covers most development and office-plus-creative work at a lower price.
Is 36GB enough?
For 4K editing, photography, development and most 3D work, yes. Very large 8K projects or local AI models benefit from more memory, which must be chosen at purchase.
Can I use my existing monitors?
Yes, via Thunderbolt/USB-C or HDMI. Up to five external displays are supported.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
Mac Studio M5 Max is the step up when the GPU, memory bandwidth and I/O actually limit your work: media professionals get SDXC, 10GbE and five displays without a dock. Budget for fast external storage because 512GB fills quickly with footage — see our
external SSDs.
✓ Buy it if you edit video, work in 3D or audio, or run heavy development and AI workloads and want pro I/O in a compact desktop.
✕ Skip it if your work is mainly office and light creative — a Mac mini is enough — or you need more than 36GB memory.
→ Also consider Mac mini with M5 Pro for a smaller, lower-cost Pro setup.
