ASUS ROG Ranger Gaming Backpack 16 for 16 inch Laptops 18L 1260D Water-Repellent Reflective Straps Black

The manufacturer’s name for this bag is “ROG Ranger Gaming Backpack 16”, not “BP2501”. BP2501 is an internal ASUS SKU string — it appears in the model designation BP2501 ROG RANGER BACKPACK/16 in ASUS’s own store systems — and European distributors have promoted it into the product title almost universally. We have followed ASUS’s published product name and record BP2501 as the internal designator. If you are cross-shopping, BP2501 and this are the same bag.

It is a 16 inch bag, and only a 16 inch bag. ASUS publishes no 17 or 18 inch compatibility for this model, unlike the BP2701. The laptop compartment is 35.4 x 26.4 x 3.04 cm; measure your machine against that rather than the inch rating.

Do not treat this as a variant of the BP2701 — and note which is newer. These are different chassis from different generations, and counter-intuitively this lower-numbered model is the newer product, announced in February 2024. It is smaller (18 litres against 22), heavier (1.10 kg against 0.93), and the feature sets differ: ASUS publishes no tablet compartment and no itemised pocket count for this bag, where it publishes both for the BP2701. Its reflectivity is on the shoulder straps rather than on slash panels. Specifications are not interchangeable in either direction.

Water-repellent is not waterproof. ASUS claims water-repellent 1260D polyester, water-repellent zippers and water-repellent PU leather, and its spec-table feature tag is Water-Repellent only — unlike the BP2701, this model carries no Lightweight or Reflective feature tag. No rating, no test standard, no rain cover. eBay listings calling it waterproof are wrong.

The 18 litre figure comes from ASUS marketing copy, not the Tech Specs table, and ASUS publishes no country of manufacture for this model. No RFID pocket, waist belt or top carry handle is published.

✓ Carrying a 16 inch gaming or creator laptop with its charger and peripherals

✓ Anyone who wants the ROG look in a more compact pack than the 22 litre BP2701

✓ Commuters who walk or cycle after dark — the reflective element is on the straps, where it is seen from the side

✓ Users who keep a phone and small valuables in concealed rear pockets rather than side pockets

✓ Travellers using the quick-fix design to secure the pack to a rolling case

There are two things to establish about this bag before anything else, because the trade gets both wrong. Its name is not BP2501 — ASUS calls it the ROG Ranger Gaming Backpack 16, and BP2501 is an internal SKU string that European distributors have universally promoted into the title. And it is newer than the BP2701 despite the lower number: ASUS announced it in February 2024. Reading the model numbers as a generation order will lead you to exactly the wrong conclusion about which is current.

What it actually is, is a denser and more compact take on the same idea. Eighteen litres against the BP2701’s twenty-two, in a shorter, deeper shape — 44 x 31 x 17 cm against 49 x 31.5 x 15.5. And it weighs more: 1.10 kg against 0.93 kg. The reason is in the specification ASUS publishes here and not on the BP2701: 1260D high-density polyester. That is a heavy, dense weave, and the extra 170 grams is fabric rather than features. Whether that is a good trade depends on whether you value the bag surviving a decade of being thrown into car boots more than you value carrying less.

The ergonomic claim ASUS makes for this model is specific and unusual: side-mounted collars that conform to the shape of your back, alongside extensive back mesh. It is a different approach from the BP2701’s three separate meshed pads, and it is the sort of thing you only appreciate with the pack loaded.

Be aware of what ASUS does not publish here that it does publish for the BP2701. No tablet compartment. No itemised pocket count — only “multiple interior and exterior compartments”. And the spec-table feature tag is Water-Repellent alone, where the BP2701 carries Water-Repellent, Lightweight and Reflective. That last one is interesting, because this bag plainly does have reflective straps; ASUS simply has not tagged it. We have published the copy claim and left the tag difference visible rather than tidying it away.

One naming trap to note in passing: ASUS describes this bag’s exterior as having a “bold cyber-text pattern”. That does not make it a Cybertext Edition — that is a specific grey variant of the BP2701 with its own part number. Two ASUS bags with cyber-text in the description are not the same product.

Finally, the water claim. Water-repellent fabric, water-repellent zippers, water-repellent PU leather, no rating, no rain cover. ASUS is consistent and modest about this across the range; the retailers describing it as waterproof are not.
